Staffy shapes & sizes
My rescue Pup was given to me as a Staffy Cross. When hes been to the vets she thinks hes full staffy!
Hes got quite long legs & a longer snout and when he yawns he has the staff mouth shape but he hasnt got the short square jaw......
I personally dont care what he is as hes my baby but Ive been told there are 3 different types of staffy and he just isnt the shape and size people expect for a staffy!
Is there any truth in the 3 different types?
Also how can I get him to stop wanting to pull ears when he meets other dogs in play? He means no harm but hes a little rough to watch, altho his staffy friend saffy loves it when they play like that!!
Hes seems to have stopped weeing and pooing in the house now, only took a couple of weeks and hes 14 weeks and growing fast!

Re: Staffy shapes & sizes
There is only one Staffy! But the size and shape varies emensly as to wether they have more bully or terrier in them if that makes sense. x

Re: Staffy shapes & sizes
I really dont care whether he is full or cross. Hes not being studded ir anything and theres no purpose for me knowing except by what people have told me & because he doesnt fit the "average" staffy appearence.
Hes a character and never far from my side ( well cheek or neck as he insists on laying on those 2 places if he can ;-) lol)
Hes a beauty to me xx

Aw, poor little pup! At least he's found you, now!

Yes some kennels are breeding a shorter muzzled staff, whilst others are breeding longer muzzled ones! That doesn't mean that one is more staffy than the other, though, just a different interpretation of the breed standard!
By the way, he looks pretty much a full staffy to me, although it's hard to judge his size from the pics - he's gorgeous!

Sorry blaze im not saying your wrong but all good kennels breed that look including crossguns because thats how the standard says the dog should lookblaze wrote:That stubby nose u are taking about often comes from a certain kennels, someone will correct me if im wrong but i think crossguns are breeding there staffs with quite a short snout x

Re: Staffy shapes & sizes
The crossguns dogs do tend to have very short muzzles, whilst some other kennels are breeding more 'terrier' type dogs with sloghtly longer muzzles. Both are within the breed standard - just different interpretations.
Head and Skull
Short, deep though with broad skull. Very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop, short foreface, nose black.
This just means that the length foreface, (stop to nose), is shorter than the length of the head (occiput to stop). Breeders have always interpreted that the way they prefer to see it!

Re: Staffy shapes & sizes
Crossguns have done fantastic with there dogs because they are ideal to the standard Ive never seen a terrier type stafford winning as more terrier, more bull is not the ideal a 50/50 split is what the stafford should be any variation unbalances the head.Caryll wrote:The crossguns dogs do tend to have very short muzzles, whilst some other kennels are breeding more 'terrier' type dogs with sloghtly longer muzzles. Re: Staffy shapes & sizes
I totally agree! But there will always be those who interpret a written standard the way they want to! Therefore, you'll get staffs with a shorter foreface (some much too short) & staffs with a longer foreface (some much too long!). They're still within the standard, but won't do so well in the show ring. But if you're not going to show, does it matter?

Just suprised the breed record holder kennel was chosen to interprit the short muzzle

Re: Staffy shapes & sizes
He looks a bit like mine.
I bought mine when he was 8 weeks old and was told he was crossed with a lurcher but as he's got bigger he looks more like a SBT x APBT,when we go on walks most people ask if he's crossed with a pitbull.
