grass/pollen allergies
So today we went a nice walk in the sun, she paddled in the water, then she ran into some bushes........then came out looking like somethin from a horror movie, she had all these welts on her head round her ears, eyes.
Took her home n used the mild wipes for dogs and discovered they were up her legs and chest too.
I was told piriton is gd for allergies
What should i do

Use the piriton and keep a very close eye her - from what I have read this usually aids it. Such a worry Xx

Re: grass/pollen allergies
Sounds like an allergy yes half a piiton and you could rub sudocream on it. If it doesnt go though a trip to the vets xx

Re: grass/pollen allergies
If they were raised bumps it is likely to be an allergic reaction to whatever she rubbed on in the bushes. Yes give half an antihistamine if no change in about half an hour to an hour then give the other half. This may well knock her out and help her to sleep. I'm sure she will be fine tomorrow, if not then pop along to the vet.

Re: grass/pollen allergies
Sounds very severe for just an allergy. Were there nettles in the grass ?. We give Piriton throughout the summer as Flo's toes get sore. We also use Cortavance spray which gives rapid relief.
As said above, if they don't go down fairly quickly, a trip to the vets would be wise.

Hope the antihistamine has worked. It may well be an allergic reaction.

Re: grass/pollen allergies
I would wait and see if it happens again. If it was long grass and who knows what in there it could be anything. No point in giving antihistamine if that won't sort it. If it happens again you'll be aware and can look to see what else was in the grass.
If its a grass allergy you'll find the problem with short grass too.

Re: grass/pollen allergies
Poor girl If she does get them again, maybe try something like this http://www.holisticanimalmedicines.com/store/allergen_immune_grass_pollen_mold_plants.html to see if it can build her natural immunity.
I know some people who have tried this and they have had success so I've ordered a meat types/diary allergy one for our boy to see if it helps with his mild allergy from chicken and eggs. I also got this http://www.holisticanimalmedicines.com/store/scratch_relief_topical_anti-itch_skin_heal_25m_liquid.html to use as well in case he needs it.

That's probably a question for a vet. I'm not sure if they are just different brand names.

Re: grass/pollen allergies
almost any product that only contains antihistamines is fine. anything with additives like caffine, pain killers etc stay away from. cheapo packet of tesco own brand is just as good as any other. I have to keep a packet in the car and at home because marley has severe reactions to wasp and bee stings. and guess what he like to chase and eat... dont stress to much about dose either as they will have very few side effects, just go non drowsey which will be 3rd gen and steer away from diphenhydramine and chlorphenamine which will give you a very sleepy dog.debs0109 wrote:Which ones aren't safe for dogs? Re: grass/pollen allergies
Our vet suggested Piriton as the best as it has different ingredients than others. Sid also has to have a monthly injection of immunotherapy which we get from the vet but do ourselves. We took him on holiday to Spain and he didn't scratch once!

Re: grass/pollen allergies
That's interesting Jenny. Our vet offered jabs but I was sceptical as Flo is dust mite and grass pollen allergic. The worst of My Flo's problems are with her back paws which she nibbles.

Re: grass/pollen allergies
Sid has steroid tablets from the vet when he is really itchy. He can't have them at the moment though as he is on pain killers for poorly back legs at the moment. He is nibbling his back legs too. I find having a filled bone takes his mind off it for a while and gives him something else to chew. The immunotherapy has definitely helped as he had horrible patches that used to bleed before. He is grass and dust mite allergic too. I hope Flo improves soon.

Re: grass/pollen allergies
Thanks Jenny. We have tried everything with Flo but she still nibbles those back paws. Before we knew what was going on she used to get really sore but now we simply manage the condition so that she doesn't get sore.
The jabs might help but I'm still resisting as she's been through so much. It's getting to the point though that I think it might be the way forward.
