pollen allergy
Hi everyone,
We think sky may have an allergy to pollen. Both summers now ( from april/may) She has started to chew her feet, and scratch all the time ( She is fully flead) Tonight shes cut one of her teats as shes scratched that much! Obviously vets is on the cards, but is there any good products we can use in the mean time to ease the comfort?
Thankyou

Re: pollen allergy
My Vinny is similar. We make sure we wipe him down after he's been outside; he gets sprayed with apple cider vinegar/water mixture to help with the itching and when his tum is really red and looks like excema we use sudocrem to soothe it. We also give him antihistamines when needed (I know UK forum users use piriton) and occasionally he will get a wash with an anti-itch shampoo the vet gave us.

My Flo is Pollen Allergic which was diagnosed after tests at the vets. She also bites her rear paws, never the front ones though. We wash her feet and pretty much do the same as the above. We can't cure it but can manage it and relieve the symptoms as best we can. We also use Cortavance spray which gives almost instant relief.

Re: pollen allergy
Same probs here with Vinnie, his feet are so red and sore, been giving his feet a good wash and then a soak in warm salt water, 1 teaspoon of salt to a pint of water. I rub sudocreme before a walk as it acts like a barrier. Make sure feet are dried well too. I do feel for you its a pain xxx

Re: pollen allergy
I've not used Piriton as my girl is only 16kg so not sure how much to use!
However the bepanthen I could see as soon as I put it on us helping her! She lays down now and coks her leg up so I can apply it! I put it on before a walk as a barrier, I wash her face and paws when we get home and apply more cream in the afternoon if she's red and itchy. I have also ordered some apple cider vinegar for a spray bottle. Any idea how much I dilute it anybody? Thanks for all the help she is a lot happier and more comfortable now

Re: pollen allergy
Piriton is fine for dogs. In fact our vet recommended we use it, once a day. One word of caution though, don't tell the chemists that its for a dog as they may well refuse to sell it to you, which is exactly what happened to me

Re: pollen allergy
If you are unsure of how much of the tablet to administer try with half a tablet first then give the second half after an hour if no change in condition.

Re: pollen allergy
Would you guys recommend this for an 8 months old?
He seems to be scratching an awful lot and bites his feet sometimes, we took him to the vet about it and they gave us some steroid tablets for him but wouldn't run any tests on him because he's not 1year old. We don't want to have him on steroids for 4 months either with the side effects they can cause later in life for him.

Re: pollen allergy
I'd personally say cream and sprays are better for an 8 month old than steroids. The sudocrem has worked wonders! Even cleared her scabs from scratching too. I'm sure some of the other members will be able to confirm though. Bless their little paws!!

Re: pollen allergy
I wouldn't want to use steroids for that long either. Try the remedies suggested, the creams will help along with washing feet after every walk. As regards Piriton, I'm not sure if its appropriate for such a young one. Call the Vet and ask to be certain.

Think Benadryl helps 1mg per kg off weight. The pills normally come in 25mg sizes
