Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Hey guys/girls
Sky has recently developed really bad Dandruff, it is almost like I've thrown a tea spoon of shredded Coconut over her. However she doesn't seem to be scratching or anything. I took Sky for a walk around Wakerley Woods for a couple of hrs, and by god did she get herself covered in Mud. The last time she had a bath was around 6 months ago, so I thought maybe that I would do bath her when I get back, make her smell good again, and fix the dandruff.
After the bath everything looked amazing. But now a couple of hrs have gone by it has come back!!!! At the moment she is being fed Wainwright tinned food, and Wainwright dry biscuits. She has 1/4 a tin of the meat, with a sprinkle of the biscuits as she is fuzzy for her meals.... For snacks she has Boneo biscuits which she adores.
Now I have been quite good for once and read the other posts which mention fish oil, i.e Sardines. I've looked on Tesco and they do Tinned Sardines 50p each, obviously they are doused in either tomato sauce, sunflower, brine etc etc! Which one is the best to get her. I'm not a keen fan of fish, but I could cope with having them in a can. Also if correct how many times should I try giving her a can each week, should it replace one of her meals?
Is there anything else I could try, could it possibly be the food?

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
I used sardines mixed in with her kibble (Moo is also fussy and I am not a fan of wet foods) - half a can a day and I used the one in oil Xx

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Hello! I have never fed wainwrights, but know that there are others on the forum that speak highly of it! It could be the food, has she ever been on a different food?
Which shampoo did you use in the bath also? You don't ever put anything else on her coat?
Raw egg and oily fish is great for the coat, as is coconut oil. I'd just be wondering why it's like it in the first place! May be an allergy?

Get either in oil or tomato and feed a couple of tins a week. You could also feed a raw egg a couple of times a week too

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Sardines in tomato sauce or oil are both ok, personally I'd put the sardines in her kibble a few times a week. (2/3 times) for her meal. You could also try coconut oil or salmon oil and yes it could be her food.

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Thanks for all the replies. Well for the past 4 weeks, she has been on Pets@home tins (Cheap), instead of the Wainwright because for some reason the shop near me didn't stock them, and I had ran out. Day before yesterday was the day I put her back on the Wainwright tins, as I managed to buy a bulk load. Probably should have mentioned that sooner.
I don't recall her ever having dandruff before, so maybe it could be the cheapish tins? Tomorrow I will buy some tinned sardines in oil and she can have 1/2 tin with kibble in the morning.
The shampoo I used was Johnsons, Black satin shampoo. I have never used anything on her coat before.

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
I have never used a shampoo on Moo, if needed jus a rinse and could very much be the food. I buy online as there are no pet shops close
www.petmeds.co.uk
www.chemistdirect.co.uk
They may be worth a look and generally cheaper Xx

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
I give peppa half a tin a day I prefer the tomato/brine not the oily one. I also give her coconut milk every once in a while when she's having kibbles .
Since she's white but loves spreading mud/dirt/grass/water I washed her quite few times with a shampoo called animology I use the white wash but they have others and she loves having bath and its very gentle.

Is that just the normal Coconut milk, that you and I would drink. Do you give her that as a change for water occasionally?

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
No it's the tinned coconut milk/ reduced cream i don't give her too much but she adores it and to my knowledge its healthy and her coat looks great.
I think rhea dandruff is a result of the food change. When I give her kibbles I use burns for puppies it's ok.

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Sardines as well as coconut oil do wonders - so does an apple cider/water mixture sprayed onto the coat and rubbed in, or even about 5ml of apple cider added to their water.

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Thanks for all the replies everyone, I'll monitor her for the next few weeks, and I went out and purchased a small stack of Sardines this morning. Hopefully she will not turn her nose up at them, but if she is anything like she is with Tuna it will be devoured in seconds. Hopefully this will make it a little better.

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Hi what ever you do dont buy sardines in brine, brine is not very good for dogs as it is salty and salt is dangerous for dogs, i know a lady that fed her dog it in brine for years and when it died it was from too much salt in the body. i give millie sardines once a day in one meal half a tin in sunflower oil as it is very good for their skin
Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Does sound like it could be the cheapy p@h tins that are giving her the dandruff. And very good point from Kattie also about the brine! I always feed mine in oil I make mackeral loaf for treats too and use the oil in the recipe. Biscuit's coat it like velvet! I use a kong zoom groom once a week too, to stimulate the oil production and give a tidy up... she likes it too cause it's like a massage

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Thanks kattie I had no clue that brine is so bad I only gave it to peppa once as she prefers the tomato sauce sardines I also tried the sunflower oil once but it gave her the runs. Anyway good to know.
I gave frozen carrot today for the 1st time and she liked it probably cause she's teething its really good.
I realised peppas is eating much better than me...

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Peppa, just a note also, tinned coconut milk is extremely fatty, you might be better off getting coconut oil from holland and barret it's great for them and much healthier than the tinned variety x

Result :-)
Thought I would update you all. Since putting her back on proper Wainwright food, and tinned Sardines in the morning the dandruff has gone! She also loves the fish, every morning I'm doing her breakfast she is inches away waiting for the go code to eat :-)..
Here is a pic of the happy girl again :-)

Glad to hear it's worked I think I'm going to give sardines a go with Alfie as he gets dandruff too! He is already on burns/wainwright food though so no idea what's causing it xx

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
hopefully the Sardines will work for you too :-). Not bad either with the price of the tins. I bought the Tesco brand 50p each, and that lasts two days, so at least it is not breaking the bank. However when I go tonight to stock up, I'll look like some fish freak lol.
Alfie looks dead cute from the pic. I've not tried Burns food but from the website it look decent stuff.

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
Yeah I'm definitely going to try them! That's not bad at all then if it lasts two days. Aww thank you I always come on here on my phone so can never see everyone's pics
He was really good with the burns food to start with but then he suddenly stopped eating it, literally leaving a whole bowl of food morning and night, so now we mix wainwrights wet food with the burns dry food and he LOVES it! He'll be a very happy boy if he gets sardines too!! xx

Re: Sardines/ Fish to help with dandruff
tesco also do a value sardines as well for 38p and as far as i can tell its only the packaging thats changed. its a great source of protein, B-vitamins, Omega-3 oils and selenium so not just good for the coat it's a good aid for growth as well.
