swollen neck after dog attack
Hunky is my nine month old staffie, and the other day we took our normal walk that we always do when a dog approached us and grabbed Hunky by the neck. I pulled Hunky out of the way and screamed out of panic, and the dog let go. The dog did not break Hunkys skin, but the next day the side of Hunkys neck was swelled up, I took him to the vet, he got an anti inflamitory injection. Hunky has had all his shots and apparently so has the dog that attacked him so there is no fear of a transfer of illness, however it has been 3 days since, and this morning I realized his neck is as big as it was when we took him to the vet the last time (it had started to go down). I just got nack from the vet, she gave him an antibiotic injection because she is worried that the glands have become infected from the trauma. I have to bring him back again tomorrow for a check up, but I was wondering if anyone else has expierienced this, and how long did it take for Your dog to heal? He is my first dog, and my baby, so Im freaking out as to whether or not he will be ok. Any feedback would be appriciated, thank you. Emily

Would have thought they would have given anti-biotics initially. Moo was bitten on her cheek and still has the scars but after the meds where given it healed scabbed over.

Oh bless him Also surprised they didn't offer antibiotics on first visit.. Whenever we had dog fights in the kennels they would be given as a preventative measure as that's easier than fighting infection. Hope you've given the vet bills to the other owner too!

It sounds like you know the other dog, has it done this before ? Is the owner aware of what has happened ? yes did you pass on a copy of the bill from the vet ?

Re: swollen neck after dog attack
Thank you all for your feedback. This morning the side of Hunkys neck has gone down. His throat area is still puffy though. We went to the vet for his check up where he received more antibiotics, he will get more tomorrow and possibly Sunday depending on the look of his neck. Yesterday he let my husband and I get close enough to it, finally, for us to inspect and realize that the other dog had in fact broke the skin, it is very very small, but that does explain better the bacteria and the subsequent infection.
We have seen the dog that bit him many times but the dog has never approached us, usually we see him from about 50 meters away. He is technically the responsibility of the company that my husband works for. Basically he is a mutt that is allowed to live on the property, and because of that the law is that the company has to at least give the dog its shots, but other that that no one takes responsibility for it. Here in Romania, many dogs have hard lives like that. They are strays, nobody cares for them, and they have to fend for themselves, it's not a good excuse as far as I'm concerned, but basically what it means is that no one will be helping with the vet bills.
Things that seem logical in other parts of the world, do not necessarily make sense here which probably contributes to why the vet didn't start off with the antibiotics in the first place, however the vet is a very nice woman who has a big heart.
At least now if this happens again in Hunkys life, I will know from experience to tell the vet to start off with antibiotics instead of waiting for it to be necessary.
