Small bald patch on back
Hello all
My 11 month old Bertie has a small (about 2cms in diameter) bald patch in the middle of his back. It doesn't seem to bother him at all, but he's had it for maybe 3 months now. We've taken him to the vets a number of times and been given amino acids, anti-bacterial cream and more. If anyone can identify what this is and suggest a solution I'd be really grateful.

Have the vets carried out any skin scraps?

Re: Small bald patch on back
Thanks for getting back to me. I'm afraid I don't know what a skin scrap is (I'll Google it in a minute). I'm guessing it's when you take a tiny skin sample for analysis? The vet we have been seeing certainly hasn't suggested it. We are looking for another vet at the moment. My worry is that, in the exact area I'm in I won't be able to find one that I rate highly enough...

The vets use skin scrapes to determine demodex, It may very well be that. Ask your vet to do a skin scrape to rule it out, it could also be allergies. But best to rule out demodex first

This condition may also be ringworm, this isn't actually a worm but a fungal infection, best to seek medical advice from the vet for treatment.

Sounds like a new vet is in order! Demodex does cause hair loss but, I don't know, it just doesn't look like that to me. Definitely get them to do a scrape though

Thanks for the additional replies guys. I do appreciate them. And so does Bertie I'm on a mission to find a vet that'll do the skin scrape and I'll take it from there.

Re: Small bald patch on back
My dog had a little patch, the same size as you describe, on the top of his head when I got him from the rescue. It looked rather like the patch in your picture. I took him to the vet and he did a scrape and put the sample under the microscope to rule out the presence of a parasite. He was clear. The vet observed that he could feel stubble in the bald bit. It was new hair follicles and, sure enough, the hair grew back eventually. However, when Douglas had to go into kennels when I went on holiday, his bald patch reappeared again in exactly the same place. My suspicion is that it's stress-related. The patch is in the process of growing over once again. It is a strange thing, but as long as he is not in any discomfort and there are no mites or similar present, then I do not consider it to be a problem. I try and avoid touching the affected spot - in case my hand would inadvertently exacerbate the problem. Also the vet said to try putting on savlon from time to time (an antiseptic in a tube) so I use that on him sometimes. Douglas has now almost completely regained his beauty (as good as it gets!). I hope this alternative experience is helpful. It may not be anything to worry about.

Re: Small bald patch on back
Hi
Thanks for getting back to me. Hopefully, it's not stress. It would be terrible to think that. I can't think what Bertie would be stressed about. Hopefully, it'll just grow back as it did with Douglas. I do need to find a vet that'll do a skin scrap first mind you. It doesn't seem to bother him, but it's obviously not right.
It's difficult to to avoid touching the spot as it's prime stroking territory.
I'll give the Savlon a go too.
