Post by JaxGirl Fri Feb 14 2014, 04:40

Hi there, I am wanting to change the brand of dry food my puppy has been eating with her breeder, does anyone have any ideas of the best brand in new zealand? I have looked at a few but still unsure which one to go with. (we pick her up next week and want to be sorted for the swap over, I also know its best to mix her old food with the new food gradually) thanks Smile

I've just switched to raw but one of brands that I do like and used in the past that is available there is Taste of the Wild High Prairie Canine Formula (for all stages).
I also had good success with Canidae Pure Land Grain Free but I'm not sure if you can get it there.

2 that I haven't tried but would love to try if I wasn't doing raw are the ZiwiPeak and K9 Naturals products. They're both NZ companies and the products look great with all natural products and no crap in there.

I have seen people from Down Under say good things about Natures Science or something like that. I believe that is available "down there" lol

Eukanuba is one brand I wouldn't recommend. I've known many peoples dogs have bad allergic reactions to it including one of my friends American bulldog. He couldn't figure out why his dog kept on having bad skin allergies and hotspots until we told him to switch to a more natural grain free product. He couldn't believe the difference after less than 2 weeks in his dogs skin after switching. He's still pissed off at his vet who recommended it to him (yes the vet was selling it) and for all the discomfort his dog was in for years and $$$$ spent on different skin treatments, scrapes and other things when it was quickly fixed by changing to a much better quality and nutritionally better kibble.

I really hate when I hear this. So disappointing when the professionals we trust to to give us the right advice about our pets fail us this way. I know my friend back in Sydney had a few words with his ex-vet when he switched food after my advice and his dog made a major improvement and the skin issues were resolved. Money was never an issue for him but he hates everything that his dog had to go through when the solution was so simple. Its amazing how many vets fail to know much about nutrition and things such as chicken can also cause skin issues with certain dogs.

I switched to raw back in November. I use a company called Natural Instinct. It's a complete diet using vegetables and fruit plus crushed bone minced through the meat which is human grade. You could check on-line for a supplier down your way. The difference is amazing, lovely shiny coat, his poos are solid and less volume, no smelly bum burps and much easier to control his weight. This particular brand comes in 1 kilo tubs and 1 tub does Bacchus 5 meals (roughly 200 grams twice daily. He is 19 kilos ) and is very convenient to feed. He also gets meaty bones twice a week in place of a meal. ( Chicken carcasses, lamb necks, lamb ribs ) Bacchus is 19 months now but I wish I'd started him on it from the beginning.

Hey Reuben,

Thanks for the review. I am considering changing my Pup Barney to this and you may just have swung it.

Unfortunately for JaxGirl who is in New Zealand, Natural Instinct isn't available BUT a quick google search did come up with a few sites that may be a good alternative.
