Worried about a small lump (ear)
Hi everyone
Last Saturday night whilst I was cuddling my boy on the sofa watching TV I was stroking around his ears and suddenly came across a small pea sized hard round lump underneath the skin at the back of his ear.
It's easy to manipulate and is very close to the surface of the skin and when you stretch the skin out it stays at the surface of the skin. It does not appear to give him any pain or discomfort and is not red on the outside and fur covers it. Of course, immediately concerned as to what it was being a 'lump', I wasted no time and went to see the vet on Sunday morning for peace of mind. Well I think I actually felt worse afterwards.
The vet couldn't give me any difinitive answer and said it was uncharacteristic of usual cysts/fatty lumps but could be the result of a tick bite or other trauma but also said that dreaded word "tumor" but said I would have be very unlucky with a dog of his age. She said she could have taken a sample of it by needle that day but as it was so small there was a good chance that the results would come back inconclusive. So then said it was up to me whether I wanted to go ahead that day or wait a week or two to see if there are any changes. I didn't really know what to do for the best but decided to give it a bit of time to see if there were any changes and to save my boy from having the procedure done possibly more than once if we end up down that route if it doesn't improve or gets bigger.
I can't stop worrying though and am constantly checking it and hoping every morning that it has 'gone away'. It hasn't changed in size since the weekend.
My baby is only just over 4 years old and the thought of it being something nasty feels me with dread. Not at such a young age
Has anyone else had anything like this and I know none of us are trained vets, but I am hoping to find some reassurance I guess
Thanks

It's possible it is a fatty lump, have you noticed any more anywhere on him ?
If it stays there or appears to be getting bigger then of course contact the vet.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It is a worry but I am hoping it's nothing horrible.
Kathy - no I've not seen or felt any other lumps on him. It's in such an odd place though?!?!
I'll just have to try and stop stressing and just keep an eye on it. I just want it gone or to know it's nothing bad
