Re: Staffie signs
No, I don't understand why people do to be honest, as far as I was aware they were used for guarding breeds on private land. I have, however, seen one saying "Beware, overly affectionate staffordshire bull terrier on the loose" which would be much more fitting to the breed IMO

Re: Staffie signs
I have heard of these signs being used by thieves to locate and target dogs to pinch so for that reason alone I would be wary on putting one up

Re: Staffie signs
Yes I do! This is because my boy greets very boisterously and sometimes
mouths when he is excited and I just don't want anyone to think he is
being aggressive. People who come to the house that know Harry just
take no notice of the signs as they know what to expect, but it warns the 'non dog lovers'. My sign just says 'dogs running loose'.
Amazon delivered a parcel to me before Christmas and Harry was in the
garden and when he heard the latch on the gate ran round at 100mph to greet the man delivering. The poor guy took one look and jumped my 5 Bar gate dropping my parcel to the ground. Anything on the ground belongs to Harry so by the time I managed to get to him (only a short distance) the parcel was in 5 pieces. Luckily it was stuff for Harry including
a stag bar and no harm was done. Also the guy was able to laugh.

No I don't have a sign nor would I, as said above they just encourage dog snatchers as you are advertising the fact you have a dog.

Re: Staffie signs
I dont believe it attracts dog snatches, nor do i believe its giving them a bad name,i think like anything if someone wants ur dog they will take it. its a simple warning to let ppl know they are there, not to walk strate in,be cautious when entering same as you should with any dog,i dont believe theres any wrong init..my parrot has a sign saying beware,im not giving him a bad name, its because he could bite you if he wanted too, same as a dog so just be careful and realise this is his home.

Re: Staffie signs
No I don't, we have had in the past 12 months people stealing dogs like Staffy's so we don't bring Coco to anyones attention, which means that when we are out she gets to lounge upstairs out of sight (just the way she likes it!!!!). They were stealing dogs for dog fights, they would drive around streets looking for fighting and bait dogs (so no dogs were safe really) and they would put a ribbon on a tree or fence for someone to come back when no one was home and steal the dog. Haven't heard of it happening for a couple of months, but still my little girl is too precious to risk advertising we have her.

I agree. I think a sign could just help to reinforce prejudices about your lovely dogs.

Re: Staffie signs
I love my dog as much as you guys love your dogs, yes they have a bad name but i think something as simple as a sign does not make ppl walk past your house and say staffies in there oh my god they will rip ur throat out.i think its just a tad exagerated, were all different what we do with our dogs,i think some of you rather than giving advice on why you dont do this or that, your telling people it will and thats what it does, respect everyones different i think is a better way, nobody is better than anyone on here because they do something you wouldnt dream of doing!

Re: Staffie signs
Don't know where this outburst comes from. I'll try to respond (hopefully I won't regret it)..
A photo with a sign which is supposed to be menacing, suggests to the reader that you don't want to be faced with a dog that looks like this. If you doubt this, then ask yourself if you wouldn't be amused by a threatening sign hosting a picture of a Chihuahua. Staffies are misunderstood and all of us live with that every day. Why contribute to that misunderstanding by having the image of a Staffie where a scary dog is supposed to be?
On the other hand, if you really think that a "beware of the dog" sign would make you feel safer, then why not get one without the picture?
Normally people create threads to ask for the thoughts and advice of community members. I believe it's why this forum exists and why most of us are here. If you didn't want feedback, why did you ask for it?

That's why we don't have one. I won't even put the Dogs Trust one in the car as the car is parked on the drive and that might alert someone to the fact we have dogs.

its not aimed at everyone, and not creating an argument,i did not write anything bad,i think some should respect ppl do things different and some ppl are a little too blunt because they would not do that!

Re: Staffie signs
There is a sign on our gate saying Beware of the dog. You have to ring doorbell on it (6foot high) as you have to enter it to get to front door, but can't really see it until you walk up the driveway to the gate. It was already there when we moved in 12 yrs ago and we left it. It does make people a bit more careful even when we didn't have a dog after our old one passed on. Made us feel a bit more secure somehow. Think it's all personal choice. Ours does not say what breed of dog we got though.

Re: Staffie signs
no i do not have a sign. The eyes of law see that if you have a 'beware or warning' your dog lives here sign, and your dogs bites someone, you are liable as they deem you know your dog is potentially dangerous, and yes it does attract people to steal dogs
