Re: PUPPY BITING
Hi from me and Nico, have you tried the time out method? Every time he nips at anything put him into another room with no toys, interaction or words for a few mins. Staffs are such sociable dogs that they really don't like being away from us, he'll soon make the association that biting leads to no fun for him and it should slowly phase out. I'm still doing this with with my boy but its very few and far between now!

thanks sazzle and hi from me & monty
I thought it was normal for puppies to bite but he is biting down really hard and when we say no he doesn't take any notice and its just we're a bit worried if he grows up to be vicious.

Re: PUPPY BITING
Don't worry, at that age they don't have it in them to be viscous so this won't evolve into aggression

Re: PUPPY BITING
Hi and welcome. My now 2 year old girl Coco use to bite a lot as a pup (think hubby still has a scar from her!!!). We use to use the time out method which worked a treat. We were renovating our house when we bought Coco home as a pup and the only place we could contain her in was our toilet (actually was good because she couldn't get in to any mischieve in there as long as the toilet paper was up high!). She hated being put in there and it didn't take her long to figure out that every time she went to bite us she was put in the toilet. I was told by my puppy school teacher that when I put her in the time out to pick her up and hold her out in front of me (so she wasn't facing me) and tell her in a gruff voice that she was bad. I was not to make eye contact with her, just put her in the time out and leave her there for 3 minutes. My teacher had suggested if I didn't have a sufficent time out spot to use a dog crate but I used the dog crate for her special place (bed time and rest time) so I didn't want her to think of it as a bad place.
Good luck and welcome to the forum from Coco and I.

Re: PUPPY BITING
Im having the same issue with boycie. We use some time out sessions to when he doesnt listen to "no" he also growls like you say but it sounds worse than it is. His tail is still wagging..their just playing but they've got to learn biting is not ok. Im expecting it to take weeks but it will be worth it In the end when we have well mannered and well behaved (sometimes lol) doggies xxx good luck....p.s we do training tricks aswell and they seem to take his mind of biting constantly and bones from the butchers xx

Re: PUPPY BITING
Hi & welcome. My 11wk old has been home with us for 3wks now and over the 3wks we've definately seen a big improvement, although he still nips but a firm 'No!', I point and he tends to stop it quick smart (he didn't use to take any notice & carry on !). If he gets over excited he definately starts the nipping again (at anything & everything, even air !!), we'll give him a min or two in time out after saying "no biting, naughty" - he's slowly cotton'g on. Persistancy is the key, hang in there and remember we're here for you x

hi & welcome from me
we have been trying everything so far and nothing seems to be working, he just isn't cottoning on at all. we've tried saying no in a firm voice when he bites and weve also tried the time out method and it just doesn't seem to be getting better at all if anything his bites are getting even harder. We love him to bits but we are getting to point where we just don't know what to do with him.
has anyone got anymore suggestions x

Re: PUPPY BITING
Howdy, i know its not what you want to hear but persistence is the only thing, puppys are given these needle sharp teeth to learn how hard they should bite, his mother or other siblings would let them know by yelping, growling and biting back if they have been bitten to hard so it is up to us to teach them. When Monty bites and hurts try not to pull hand etc away as he will still think you are playing, say NO in a stern voice or whimper or pretend to cry, do it for as long as necessary until monty realises he has hurt you, (dont worry about the neighbours lol over act the crying) ignore him, he should start licking you. Its not easy, Jed has just turned 3 months old and he has just started to bite more softly (which eventually will turn to no biting) Jed still grabs hold of my pants and i am still working on that, he gives me little growls and barks at me as he thinks its a big game, it can be very annoying but i just have to be persistent until he gets it into his head that grabbing my clothes is not on, and yes i walk along with him holding on to my pants continuously telling him No naughty boy then i sit down and ignore him for a little while then get up and play again and repeat when necessary. Everyone in the household has to be consistent with doing the same training, staffys hate being ignored and will eventually learn that play time stops if he bites to hard. I also distract Jed by putting a toy in his mouth when he is biting me or something he shouldnt be. It has only been the last week that he has stared biting me softly which has taken 4 weeks to get to this point, now i have to work on no biting at all. I know its not easy and your not alone all of us with puppys go thru the same thing. Be patient and consistent and he will learn.

Re: PUPPY BITING
Hi Welcome from us and Bane! We had the same issue as do most people and it takes a lot of time to get out of them! It's really nerve racking after telling him time and time again, you'd think after 100 "NO"s they would get it!
We used the time out thing for when he decided to have a munch on us for no reason. He was told "NO" twice and if he did it again (which he always did) we just picked him up and put him in the utility room, closed the gate and left him for a few minutes. Most of the time he would come charging back out again and go right back to causing mischief and its just a case of repeating the above.
If we were playing with him, then it was distraction with a toy or as someone else mentioned, distraction with some training to put his energy into something productive
It is very tedious and it will seem like they will never learn but they do Don't give up!

Re: PUPPY BITING
Thistle was an ardent biter, I was covered with bites, try and get on top of it before your dog gets bigger, it gets worse when they are teething, I took everyone's invaluable advice on here, time out worked sometimes, ignoring was painful, I took to wearing wellies in the house to protect my calves, I shut her in the kitchen, if that didn't work I would resort to the crate, I know everyone says not to it's their sanctuary, but for the safety of my limbs and sanity I had to, she doesn't have a problem going in her crate now, she sleeps in it all night (unlocked) Giving them a toy ( charity shop teddies) to distract them from you can help as well, you just have to try everything, eventually they do get the message, but from my experience it took a long time, good luck.

What ever method you decide on (with Tip it was yelp and stopping interaction) everyone in your household has to be consistent with. It takes time but it does work. Best of luck.
