Breeds that Staffies get on with
Hello everyone. I was just curious to find out which breeds you think Staffies get on with it and also les compatible breeds. I have a feeling that there is no such thing as breed-specific compatibility among dogs - it probably always depends on the individual dog. Rupert doesn't seem to mind Labradors but he ignored them as if they aren't there. Yorkshire terriers are not a good combo. Beagles and other hunting dogs often seem to bond. Ditto ridgebacks. And, of course, other Staffies. Jack Russells tend to follow him around and he doesn't much notice them. Spaniels co-exist well but the way they interact with the world is so different - makes a very sweet combination. Of course it also depends on the other owner - what vibe they are giving out and whether the dog is allowed to play with other dogs.

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
Specific breeds? None, really. I think it mainly depends on the dog, in general. Terriers are often less likely to get along with other terriers due to the clash of their fiery natures, but that isn't always the rule.

Moo gets on with any tbh when off lead. On lead she can be a pain thankfully which isn't often...

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
I don't know so much about breeds they get on with. There are breeds that they are more or less compatible with.
As Eleanor says, terriers often don't like other terriers because they tend to have quite a sharp temperament & love a scrap.
I think any friendly dog will get on with any friendly dog! Although it's often better to try and match their weight/strength.

Ps what about to live with? Staffies are so cuddly. Do they do best with other cuddly dogs?

Tedster has a friend called Ollie who is a big black Lab, trouble is he thinks anything Lab shaped is Ollie irrespective of size or colour.
He met a whippet in the park some time ago, she came racing up to him and play bowed in front of him making it very obvious she wanted to play. The lady who owns her was happy for me to let Tedster off lead with her, she is just so fast he has no hope of catching her but that doesn’t stop him trying.
My friend has a Lab a Staffie and a Staffie/lab cross and he gets along fine with all three.

It's not just the breed to consider, it's the gender. My (male) dog seems more tolerant of bitches of whatever type. But there are so many factors where 'it-depends' that it's not possible to be categorical.

I think 'to live with' you need another Staffie. They're then matched in temperament and can play fight to their heart's content - although I'm sure the neighbours must think they're killing each other sometimes

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
Bruno will play with anyone but the bigger the better! He heads for the bigger puppies at training class and won't bother with the small ones and it's the same on walks. He's up for a good chasing session with anyone but a lot of the dogs on our walks either aren't interested or are happy to just mooch about on their own, so Bruno (quite politely I think) just leaves them too it. We did meet a spaniel a couple of weeks ago, also 5 months old, and they had the BEST time with each other chasing and playing. The spaniel was too fast but that didn't stop Bruno trying, and they had lovely rough and tumble when the spaniel eventually allowed Bru to catch up! We stood and had a chat with the owner while they played who was glad to have found another dog for his to play with too.

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
Well with Debo is not the breed, it depends on the dog temperament. Females can get away with anything, he will let them do anything. With dogs if they don't try to dominate him his fine. And even then he will tell them off if they stay back he's fine, if they fight back he won't missed a chance. So we try to read his body language when he meets with other dogs. He's best friend at the moment is a male puppy beagle, maltese female, some bull cross male. He hates little male Miniature Pinscher because he tries to bite Debo on every ocasion they meet, trying to attack him. He's always of the lead. And at one oint Debo pinned him down, he was really anoyed with him, and let him go. His owner came running after his dog, took him in his arms and without a word walked away. Next time I'm gonna tell him that I wll let Debo of the lead.

Ledger is definitely preferring of females and small dogs large dominant intact males are a big no when it comes to park greetings
He regularly stays at my parents and gets on fine with their springer collie x tho she definitely tells him who is boss just with a look.
Some of it will be down to his socialisation because he is rescue I was very cautious when meeting other dogs (and there were a couple of large males that used to drag their owners around the park) when I first got him. Since then Ledgers regular socialisation has been at agility/Flyball so generally collies/spaniels/jrt are his friends of choice

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
I think alot comes down to play style as well, some dogs love a bit of rough and tumble but others prefer chase games etc. id let mine play with any bull breed or gsd, lab that style of dog but whippits, greyhounds etc would be a no no as they seem to have a more elegant play style.

Rocky will usually get along with a dog who is with an owner that he trusts. Spaniels he likes usually and labs. He definitely does not like any boxers that we have come across and of course now GSD can be problematic sometimes.

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
My two get on with anyone really, not so keen on dogs being overly dominant and up in their faces though so... Charlie prefers smaller dogs as he's a bit of a wimp he's more confident with them, but he plays nicely with bigger ones too! Eb loves bigger breeds as she's a rough player and loves a good chase and loves to bardge to live with I would another staffie would definitely be best, we matched ebony up to a bigger dog (staff cross Ambull) than her so she could get the most out of playing how she prefers, she will be gentle with little dogs but you can see her holding herself back a lot.

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
I really do think that it's down to the personality of each individual dog.
When we rescued Rod we already had an old rescue lurcher (Alf) who was extremely quiet and calm.
You could not have got two dogs who could be more different, both physically and in character, but it really worked.
Alf taught Rod some manners and calmed him down, and Rod gave Alf a new lease of life....so much so that he ended up becoming the main mischief maker!
They went everywhere together, played together, and cuddled up to each other every night for several years, the very best of friends.
Alf eventually became ill and the time came for us to make the heartbreaking but right decision to have to have him put to sleep - the vet said, and we agreed with this also, that it was Rod who had kept him going for his last few weeks.

Jabba's best friend is my mums Foxie Ally, they get along like a house on fire. Jabba met one of his brothers not that long ago & they didnt get along at all. I think its more to do with the dog than the breed.

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
Yeah, I don't think Kuchar is breed conscious at all. He adores every dog on sight and wants to play. If, as happens occasionally (especially with Jack Russells I'm sorry to say), he is met with a volley of abuse from the dog, he will make a strategic withdrawal although still open to renegotiate friendship terms.
The only exception to this has been quite recently (2 months ago at nearly 2 years old) when the other dog returned again for another yell at Kuchar, and Kuchar yelled and growled and lunged back!!! HUGE shock to me, he'd never done anything like this before, even under the severest provocation, and fortunately has not shown any inclination to get arsy again with any other subsequently vocal dogs (although he hasn't met this particular dog again). I hate to tell you what the breed of this yelling dog was - not a JRT! Much closer to home

Well i have a staffy and ambull and they get on brilliantly! But harvey has always got on with all other breeds, but both the boys LOVE spaniels, and lurcher/greyhound types.

My jerry gets on with all breeds. He's had a couple of spats while on lead but it's only ever if we are standing still for a long period of time. His favourites are border terriers, spaniels and collies. He loves to wrestle and will even try and play wrestle smaller dogs which usually end up getting squashed because he thinks he's a chawawa lol. I believe it's generally like humans, if their personalities get on nice all is well.

Lola grew up with a weimeraner, they seemed to compliment each other well.
Breeds to avoid? Border terriers that love down the road. No idea why, but Lola doesn't like him.

Mimi gets on great with the brother in laws American bull dog, a female staff who lives next door and mother in laws puppy lurcher. she generally steers clear of big dominant male types and little chihuahua type dogs. we meet a british bulldog on walks a lot, not sure if it's male or female tbh, its too fat to tell! she really does not like two big akita's that walk past a lot! she runs straight in the house!

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
there are two other staffys in my street a three year old male that lexi absolutely loves and chases him around until he gets fed up and wanders over to me grumbling as if to say `take her away` lol and a 5 month old male that lexi gets into domination competitions with but he got the upper hand one day and scared lexi to bits , cant blame him though as lexi can be a bit of a bully when it comes to playing lol
she met two Siberian huskies in the park and they instantly started to act dominant with her so shes generally wary of dogs bigger than her until she realises theyre not a threat
she also gets along with my brothers two cocker spaniels , the older one is a bit grumpy and blind so she generally torments the poor bugger cause she realises he cant see her so runs circles around him

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
yes, Spaniels and Beagles seem to have high energy, but a very different kind of energy to Staffies and they seem to complement each other. I was thinking of fostering a pointer. My dog seems to get on with most dogs, although not that interested in smaller dogs. He gets annoyed with dogs if they are repeatedly aggressive - Yorkshire Terriers.

Bane seems to want to play with anything he sees still although he is wary of bigger dogs and dogs that make a lot of noise...he often sits and rolls over if one comes near for a sniff! Then he gets on his mission to lick every centimetre of the inside of their mouths!
But the best play times he has had has been with: the Golden Retriever next door, they love eachother! Most labs at the park who can tollerate his puppyness, a couple of Huskys although we always get mixed reactions, a Beagle, Dalmation, French Bulldog pup and the female Cockapoo from puppy club who we thought Bane would bully after being used to the Retriever but she was actually the more boistrous one! haha

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
Lady seems to get along with most ..
a whippet, tibetan terrier and a younger staffy be her favourite playmates when they are about ( all males ) .. however now .. she's taken a distinctive dislike to all yorkies ..
about three weeks back .. she was on lead .. we were just about to enter our local park .. when
an off lead yorkie ran up and immediately started to snarl and bark in her face ..
i.e. lips curled teeth barred ..
had no idea of yorkie's gender .. it got shouted at by its human ..
Lady was straining at the lead to have-a-go .. we took a detour home
she's met a few yorkies before .. but not an aggressive one ..
hasn't shown must interest one way or another ..
'till now ..
fast forward to thursday .. we were playing frizbee in the park .. no one else about ..
heard a short yappy bark from behind a stone wall .. 'lady' forgets about frizbee play ..
runs the 100 yards to the wall .. attempts to jump the wall .. fails ..
runs thru the opening ( park entrance ) heads in the direction of said 'bark'
next thing .. loud sounds of an obvious dog-fight .. ( by this time i'd figured it were the same 'yorkie' )
by the time i'd run over .. the lady-owner of the yorkie had picked up her doggie ..
and 'lady' was trying to jump up to get at it ..
managed to drag her away .. heard owner say 'she's been bitten' ( her yorkie )
i turned to say something but the woman was walking off carrying the yorkie ..
i didn't actualy witness the fight .. ( can't see through stone walls :-)
however .. i was left with the impression there were no serious injuries ..
( fairly sure i heard yapping in the park today .. i live on the park's edge )
no bite marks on 'lady' ..
so there goes off-lead frizbee play at my local park :-(( ..
( long training lead for x-mas methinks )
and that was the first 'nasty' interaction between her and another dog since she's been with me
.. 5 months now ..
anyhow .. the further result is now .. when we meet up with any yorkies when walking ..
'lady' will now growl at them .. irrespective of how they be behaving ..
( the majority being off-lead )
and walking up past any small adult dogs by an "uh-oh" feeling ..
( so far she's fine when meeting a puppy ..
( don't know how she'd react to a yorkie pup though ..

Re: Breeds that Staffies get on with
I think going back to basics is always best. My dog was attacked by a Yorkie three weeks ago. My dog did nothing. Then the Yorkie had another go and then a third. That's when my dog just got very angry and had a go back. I pulled him off and was annoyed that he had given in to this annoying little aggressive creature.
The woman who walks the Yorkie is very nice and we see each other often but now keep the dogs at a distance, which is not difficult now as the Yorkie seems to have learned his lesson and sits about a mile away waiting for his owner to stop talking to me. Even if my dog is provoked, I don't feel it is acceptable for him to have a proper go. Normally he doesn't. The only other tussle he has had is with a big white dog when their leads have gotten tangled up.

We've only really come across little old dogs with little old ladies in the park who all seem a bit grumpy and never want to play so he doesn't seem interested anymore...Bane likes bigger dogs as they aren't normally bothered by his rather boisterous play although he's a bit of a chicken to start with!
Although saying that, yesterday we were out at the park...There was Bane, his new Dalmatian friend, the Golden Retriever and a Lab all playing together nicely when a tall female staff came charging over straight to Bane to sniff.
The other people we were with said she was friendly and likes to play so we let them all have a sniff, then Bane went to jump up to start playing and she snapped at him, then chased after him snarling and growling trying to grab at his neck. Amit managed to grab Bane and she ran off back to her owners...is jumping up at other dogs something we need to discourage him to do when playing? No other dog we've come across has minded and they all seem to end up rolling over each other when they really get going.
