Other dog breeds?
Before Beau we have only had cats in the house. We actually still have a cat, but she's getting very old. (She turns 14 at the end of this year! ) So we're facing the fact that she won't be around much longer...
But, since I am no dog expert, I was wondering what other breeds of dogs you might have? It may sound a stupid question, but are there some that would get along with Staffies better than others? Beau's really good with other animals, so my main concern would be the temper of the other dog. Does breed affect this, or is it down to their individual personalities?
Many thanks!

Re: Other dog breeds?
We have a collie x corgie aswel as our 2 staff boys and they all get on great stans grown up with her. Staffs and other breeds can get on depends on the personality of the individual dog. I know someone with staffs and a chi and tehy get on fine.
WHy not adopt another staff as mentioned? x

Dempsey has 3 best friends, a GSD, a Greyhound & a Cocker Spaniel - mind you, he wouldn't welcome any of them into his home!

Suki gets along great with Huskies and almost every other dog. It really depends on the dogs though

There's a 15-20kg staffy and an 80-90kg Old English Mastiff at the rescue I foster for at the moment who are best mates - he is enormous.

I have a Kelpie and I have my staff, i regularly have a labrador who comes to stay too... I'm lucky my boy gets along with most other dogs... his best friend is Charlie a Bichon Frieze.... Small white furry and a Big brown staff charging round the field.. and yes Rolo backs down every time!

Re: Other dog breeds?
I have a lab x collie and a staff. They get on great and play really well together with the odd disagreement. Feels like having two young kids in the house sometimes with timeouts and toys being taken away

Re: Other dog breeds?
If you go to a rescue you can take beau with you when meeting the dogs you choose to check how they get along and rescue dogs have usually been checks for compatability with other dogs. If in foster the foster family will help you too and some will happily let you go to their home or come to yours to see if yout dog gets along with their foster and will be a controlled environment.

Re: Other dog breeds?
Oh, thank you! Overwhelmed with thoughts and suggestions! Please keep them coming, it's nice to know everyone else's pet history/
I was considering another one because I've never met a dog as content and chilled as her, I just thought of branching out a little. It makes sense, because it's the only breed I really have a knowledge of! I was nervous when we first had her and now I'm so happy we did, I feel like I could get that same experience if I branch out and find a different dog.
Oh, brilliant! That's exactly what I need! Do you have any experience of how long the process could be?

Re: Other dog breeds?
Can take weeks can take months. Depends really on cicumstances. Of course you'll need home checks and matching up with the perfect dog. It seems to go quicker for people who are more keen than others but it's not something to be rushed. The ones that rush seem to be the ones that bring them back because they realise they are not what they wanted after all. My mum had one foster dog who went to a lovely family. They then went on to book her to be put to sleep because she wasn't right for them. Luckily the rescue didn't allow it and swooped in to save the day and one of my mums dogs had gone to 3 other "forever" homes before we met him, he was only 8 months old! So it's not a process to be rushed into

Re: Other dog breeds?
Quick one , we thought our cat was getting old when it was 14 , it's 19 now and still going strong , if your Staff has had good socialization with other dogs you should be fine , just don't count on the cat going anywhere yet .

Re: Other dog breeds?
I would say you want a dog who can with stand the rough and tumble play of a staff. I have 2 staffs, my old boys best bud was a springer spaniel, she was always too quick for him but they used to play Chase all the time, he didn't like gsd's though and would go for any he saw so it also depends on both dogs personalities, past experiences. If it was me id be looking for a rescue staff but that's cos I just love the breed!

Re: Other dog breeds?
We rescued Maggie- May and it was the best thing in the world Don't get me wrong it wasn't easy to start with, she had no house training, was possesive of her ball when playing catch and even though she apparently was cat tested at the centre she loved chasing our cat Jake. But with lots of brillant training by partner we have pretty much nailed the toilet problem and she gives us her ball and sits to wait for it to be thrown. She still chases the cat but not as much and Jake has now learnt to give her as much as she gives him but they are slowly becoming friends We have also been lucky with Maggie and other dogs she just wants to play with every dog she sees and gives kisses to a little westie through the fence that we pass on our walk. Rescuing is def the best idea there are so many unwanted staffies and other dogs that need 'forever homes' and it is so rewarding
