Dempsey's going to the vets again tomorrow!
First topic message reminder :
So angry. I spent months socialising Dempsey & watching his body language so that I could be a responsible owner, and what happens? A bloody doberman attacked him! I'd put Dempsey on lead as soon as I saw the dog, because they've had a 'shouting' match before, but the owner's a complete drip, and has no control whatsoever. So the dog comes over & immediately lunges at Dempsey and grabs him by the left ear.
Poor boy couldn't move, couldn't defend himself without ripping his ear off. Luckily my oh was with him & he said the other guy "Sorry, but I've got to do this" and he gave the doberman a left hook to the head that he'll remember for some days. He let go, but poor Dempsey's ear's a mess. My oh got bitten as well, but he's not sure if it was Dempsey or the doberman. There was blood everywhere, oh and Dempsey were absolutely covered. These are after I'd cleaned him up............
Don't look if you're squeemish...............

Re: Dempsey's going to the vets again tomorrow!
Poor Dempsey - just read all the comments from start to finish, sounds like he is suffering from something that could have easily been avoided if the other owner was paying attention like he should have been.
That is what used to scare me when i walked my dogs when i was younger I always put their leads on but other owners just used to stand there grinning letting their dogs jump all over us
Hope he gets better soon x

Re: Dempsey's going to the vets again tomorrow!
He has to go back to the vets tomorrow at 10:10am, originally to have the stitches looked at, but I suspect it'll turn into a look at the puncture wounds & the infection.
I tried bathing it this morning & this evening in boiled salted water, mainly to keep it clean, but also to get rid of the gunk that has clogged the fur round the wounds. It's horrible, and it smells yuk! Poor fella - big strong blockhead just stood there quivering. I got some of it off, but a lot of it is just caked into his fur & I think it might need to be shaved when he's a bit better.

Took Dempsey back to the vets today & the veterinary nurse didn't like the look of the puncture wound or the surrounding skin.
She kept him in so that she could sedate him & completely clean the area.
Made an appointment to pick him up & the receptionist said that the vet wanted to speak to me before I took him away! My mind obviously went into overload, all sorts of bad thoughts reeling round & round.
Anyway, it turns out that there was an abscess under the skin & the poor boy must have been in such a lot of discomfort with it. They've cleaned it out & shaved all the fur from around the wounds (about 2 inches clear all around the injuries). He now has a hole at the base of his ear, basically an open sore, which is to be left open to heal. I've got to put some honey ointment inside the hole twice a day, and rub some skin ointment in the skin where the gunk has made it sore. Plus he's still got to take the maximum doseage of anti-bs.
The hole looks horrible, but strangely enough, it looks better than it did before - I suppose it looks healthy now.
Got to go back again on Friday to make sure it's all healing properly.
£629 and counting!

I think he's gone into hiding. Nobody's seen him since last Wednesday!
But I'll see him eventually - he can't hide forever!

that's the English bully for you. they act all hard around other dogs but when it comes down to the crunch they turn away and get their big ears bitten.

Believe me, if he'd seen the dog coming he wouldn't have turned away! He just didn't get a chance to defend himself!

Not too bad, thanks. The open wound still looks horrid, but it doesn't bother him much. Back to the vets on tuesday & we'll see where we go from there!

That's rubbish! EBTs may not start many fights, but if a dog starts on them they will finish it!

Unfortunately there's plenty of fight in them. They just don't seem to see the point of starting a fight. Personally, after having a dog aggressive stafford, Dempsey's attitude is quite refreshing.

Re: Dempsey's going to the vets again tomorrow!
i would never have an aggressive dog around me either. like staffys bullies wont start a fight but they always seem to come out second best if they do fight, thats all im saying, anyhow i hope your dempsey recovers to fight another day

I would say that the outcome of any fight depends on which dogs are fighting!
And I very much hope that Dempsey doesn't recover to fight another day! I would much rather he never fights again!

lets hope not all dogs should be able to walk without being wary

Re: Dempsey's going to the vets again tomorrow!
He's wary of next to nothing! Never has been, since I got him. I've never known a more bold, dominant dog. For a couple of days after the attack he was growling & snarling at other dogs, but he's right back to normal now. He ignores them as long as they don't come too close!

He didn't meet his match - the dobe attacked from out of the blue! He had no chance to defend himself, as the dobe had him by the base of his ear!

Re: Dempsey's going to the vets again tomorrow!
He's so much better now. He went to the vets today, the stitches have all fallen out now & the hole in his ear is starting to heal up. He has to finish the anti-bs & go back in 2 weeks, but the vet thinks he's doing really well.
Dempsey's such a wuss, I had to drag him into the surgery on his tummy & then he hid under a chair in the corner! The vet got down on the floor & coaxed him out!

So chuffed Caryll that Dempsey sounds like he's on the road to recovery... Give him a big sloppy kiss from me & inca ... He is a lush looking dog, reminds me of the times i was lucky enough to own my own EBT (Tys) .. he was such a funny funny dog who cost me a small fortune in football's ( he would run upto people playing footy and burst their ball in seconds !!!! then look at them as if to say "well that didn't last long did it" and run off back to me ).. Lost count of how many times i would be shouting " PICK YOUR FOOTBALL UP !!! QUICK" .. making me look like a mad woman.. Miss the little bu**@r ... haha

That was my Bandit all over - I lost count of the amount of times I had to say "Don't worry, I'll buy you a new one!"

Great to hear he is doing well.. poor thing must be so worried about the vets... I think they all get like that... My vet meets my sister in the car park and gives Titan a shot in the bum to make him all happy lol...
then he is much easier to get inside without trying to kill anyone ..
hope he is 100% really soon x
