bald patch getting bigget
Hello I HAVE A puppy who is nearly 6 month old. He has had a patch on his left rear leg that is getting bigger. It is starting to go bald. It doesnt irratate him. I have never seen him biting it scratching it. I took him to the vets a few weeks ago and they said use medicated shampoo on him which I HAVE been doing but there is no improvement and it is getting worse he has been flead and wormed regularly and the vets also checked for fleas. I just don't know what to do I'm worried he is going to end up with a completely bald leg which is a shame coz he is a really good looking dog and he's only young someone please help I'll post a pic so you can see it thanks

Re: bald patch getting bigget
I'm afraid I can't see the pic on this computer but if its getting bigger I'd be tempted to go back to the vets and get them to do a scrape for demodex (although that usually does start on the face).
Is there anything it could be rubbing on that causing the hair loss?

No not really he has quite a large area to walk around so it's not like he has to squeeze through anywhere to get somewhere I can't see him rubbing on anything. So what is demodex ? And is it treatable ?

Re: bald patch getting bigget
Demodex is a mite that they can get and a symptom is hair loss, saz^^^^ her daisy had demodex and yes it's definitely treatable, daisy is now back to full health, it's diagnosed with a skin scrape which is painless and takes a couple if mins for the result, I'd pop back the vets and ask them to do one

Chloe had this when she was about 6 months old - don't worry it does grow back. The vet thought it could be a mite and gave us some liquid to dab on.

I'd be inclined to think it's more of an allergic reaction. Have you recently changed his food (what's he fed, anyway?) or is he coming into contact with any plants?

Re: bald patch getting bigget
That looks exactly like the two spots Jax developed around 4 and a half months old - turned out to be localized demodex. He's now 7 months and they're all healed after being on Ivomec medication. So I'd definitely suggest a scraping just to be sure!

I would point a finger at that as a possible cause! Bakers is a terrible, terrible food. It's jam packed with additives that are known to cause not only extreme hyperactivity, but also cancer. It's also extremely low in meat protein.benhughes1986 wrote:I feed him bakers puppy complete
Please try and get a different food, one that is grain free, preferably, and has meat listed as the firsy ingredient.
I'm not saying that Bakers is the cause of your dog's bald patch, but it's certainly a strong possibility!

Chloe was actually on Bakers (or for part of her diet) when she developed her bald patch at 6 months old. I've since switched them to Wainwrights/liver/mince/sardines/chicken and it hasn't come back.Caryll wrote:I would point a finger at that as a possible cause! Bakers is a terrible, terrible food.
