Coughing problem
Hi All,
My boy Dex is 3 and since he was a pup has always been quite prone to coughing, i have asked our vet about this a few times and they have always said i shouldn't be anything to worry about but over the last couple of months it does seem to be getting worse.
He now coughs every time he barks, also when he is just sitting still he will sometimes start coughing and reaching like he has something stuck, he also coughs a lot when he eats and also when he gets excited.
Any advice on what this could be?

Mmmmm can on think kennel cough, when Moo had it it was always after she was excited, it was never severe and after a few days it was gone, can you film it? Xx

Re: Coughing problem
If its been happening since puphood i would be inclined to think there is something wrong with his throat. You should have a vet scope him

Re: Coughing problem
I don't think it is kennel cough, he has been vaccinated against this and it has been happening since he was young, its just getting worse now, i'm thinking of taking him to a different vets for a second opinion, my vets just seem to pass it off saying the breed are quite 'snorty' dogs

Re: Coughing problem
Yeah exactly snorting and snoring, surely coughing indicates a problem.

Re: Coughing problem
Bacon does the exact same thing. It's usually when he's very excited that he does this. I'd say it's less of a cough and more of like a throat clearing hack when Bacon does it. I tend to think it's due to a dry throat and him breathing fast that causes it to feel itchy or something. He also does this when he plays with a tennis ball and gets some of the fuzz in his mouth. In the case of the tennis ball, I believe some of the fuzz gets stuck in his throat and causes it to itch and he'll do it until he can clear his throat or take a sip of water. I don't really think it's a big problem since there are no signs of anything else wrong with him.
Sorry I can't offer any real help, but I figured this experience with my dog might be somewhat helpful. Still, if it worries you, by all means go back to the vet or try another vet. It never hurts to get some reassurance to ease your mind IMO!

Re: Coughing problem
Yes you must get a second opinion, heart problems can cause coughing but if he has had since a pup I don't know.
Let us know how you get on xx

Re: Coughing problem
Odd thought I know since it's a cough, but have you had his ears checked? An ear infection can often cause a cough (or hack) especially when excited, barking or playing ball. They can also recur over long periods of time if not treated.
