Re: raw bones
What do you want the bones for, Steve? I know that sounds a silly question, but is it for a meal, or just a treat?
If it's a meal, then lamb ribs are ideal cause they are softer & can be eaten fairly quickly. If it's a treat & just something to entertain, then a marrow bone (beef or lamb, but mainly beef) is ideal.
Both can have a fair bit of meat left on (if you talk to the butcher nicely!).

Re: raw bones
Then you need to get meaty bones that he can rip & tear the meat off. Ribs/necks/spines are best. Have you tried chicken wings or necks? Or duck or turkey necks? Anything that they can tear the meat off.

Re: raw bones
Dempsey loves lamb necks/spines. If you have a proper butcher (one that cuts the joints himself & doesn't just buy in the ready made packs of meat) ask him to save you a section. They're the best ones to start with as they're easier for the dog to get his mouth round & it trains them to chew it properly.
If you can't get lamb necks/ribs then go for turkey necks. They're smaller, but just as good.

Re: raw bones
He has his in the kitchen, on the lino. Whatever he doesn't eat straight away (well, within about 10 minutes) gets thrown away as soon as he leaves it long enough for me to get it!
As long as it isn't left around, and you clean the area properly, it'll be ok.

Re: raw bones
Dempsey gets one a day (or at least a raw meaty bone every day) but that's because I feed him totally raw (or as near as dammit!).
If you just want to keep teeth clean, then a couple a week will be ok, although you might want to invest in a doggie toothbrush as well!

Raw meaty bones is just an alternative to dental chews etc. When we were showing Dempsey I'd use a toothbrush & a whitening toothpaste (doggie one) daily for about 10 days before the show just to add a bit of 'sparkle' but otherwise I only clean his teeth about once a month or so. The bones do the rest.
