Bones ???
Just a quick question ... What are the best bones to give our gorgeous staff's.. I have an 8 mnth girl who just loves to get her teeth into things (her favourite is empty plastic bottles, which i take off her the minute they start to disintergrate) but i was just wondering about bones.. cooked or raw from the butchers.. an then what type of bone.. It's probably a silly question to some people but i wanna just make sure i don't give her anything that is gunna cause harm to her.. she's me precious babe haha
Thanx

Re: Bones ???
I give only raw bones and meaty bones. No "weight bearing" bones (marrow bones and such) as these are the hardest and can cause damage to their teeth. If you have a very light chewer it might not matter, but with a powerful chewer I believe in taking precautions. I use things like ox tails, chicken legs (or half a chicken), turkey necks, chicken feet, pig tails and pig ears (raw, not the processed ones), pig feet... Exept the pig tail/ear and chicken feet, that contain very little meat, I count as a meal. The rest are more like snacks.
Re: Bones ???

Re: Bones ???
Lizzie, please see the response I've made to your post.
Your boy's illness sounds more like either Giardia or bacteria on the bone, which means that your butcher has given you a dodgy one!
Raw bones (not cooked, which can splinter) are very good for dogs as long as they are fresh (and preferably frozen for a while) and refrigerated at all times.
Hollymolly, the type of bone to give your dog will vary with the purpose! A treat would be a large marrow bone, although a power chewer could blunt its teeth on them. A meal would be a meaty bone - one of the 'softer' ones like ribs/necks/spines. I give mainly lamb necks & spines together with duck and turkey necks to Dempsey. You can also give chicken wings and carcass (raw of course), although I don't because Dempsey is chicken intolerant.

Re: Bones ???
NEVER give your dog cooked bones. They can splinter and cause damage.
If giving your dog bones, please only feed them RAW

Re: Bones ???
Thanks for this post really helpfull
In my opinion for what it's wrth I think Lizzie's been really unlucky with a contaminated bone. Raw bones and meat are after all a natural diet for our beloved family members. But it is with everything, a very personal choice we all want the best for them after all x
