Tip's first socialization class Empty Tip's first socialization class

Blushing Hi
I'm a little worried because we never been to puppy school before so Saturday coming will be a first for Tip and me. What should we expect and is there anything I can do before to make sure it goes smoothly?

Sorry if this seem like a stupid worry but I don't like walking into things blindly

Tip's first socialization class Empty Re: Tip's first socialization class

Post by Nathan Thu Aug 22 2013, 10:16

make sure Tip has been to the loo. its a tad embarrassing when your pup decides to go in the middle of the class lol, and yes i speak with experience. it does happen alot though so dont worry to much.
As for everything else dont worry, its fun and your in a room full of people in the same situation as yourself you so just enjoy it.
In my case the people running the class let the more boisterous dogs play with each other separate to the timid ones at the start. by the end of the classes they were all playing together and knew each others limits.

Thank you. That does set my mind at ease. And we will be sure to go to the loo first. Tip is such a boisterious awesome little girl and I want to do right by her so she is a well balanced girl when she is grown up.

And if we can prove all the bullteriers-are-not-to-be-trusted idiots wrong all the better.

They will not expect her to fully walk on her leash like a older dog will they? She still has moments where she put her head down and bucks she is doing ok being on leash mostly but got moments where she put her head down and get stubborn

They wont expect you to have all training perfected! Going there with an open mind, many will have learnt more than others, if anything, not much at all! I really wouldn't stress, we took Rocky when he was 10 weeks, and we didn't have very much training done, so we learnt a lot, and so did others! Im sure Tip will do great! let us know how it goes Smile x

Don't feed her first! Take lots of yummy treats, you want her to be interested in you and be able to get her attention quite easily. Let her play and interact but don't let her wind herself up and get over-excited as it will be more than hard to get her calm and receptive again!

Tip's first socialization class Empty Re: Tip's first socialization class

Post by nicolene Iveson Thu Aug 22 2013, 13:19

Thanks for the advice so far we really appreciate it a lot. I been in contact with the lady that runs the classes and there is another bully pup and two pit bull pups as well as some smaller breed pups in the class Saturday.

I'm excited cause I think she will enjoy having dogs more her own age to play with.

And an update on Sasha and Tip. Sash has laid down the boundaries and so far its going well but as I said in another post Tip and Sash aren't allowed unsupervised together. I'm so proud of Sash as she was sitting next to me and asking for a scratch while Tip was sitting on my lap and neither showed any agression so I'm proud of them both. I scratchedd them both and then when she had enough Sasha got up and went to do her own thing.

Sasha has made so much progress from the scared overly agressive little girl we brought home and I want to cry sometimes at how she let down her walls and let us in to love her and to be loved by her in return.

Yes do enjoy yourself, it is good fun Vinnie was the most boisterous when I took him as a pup, but also the most trained so he never let me down too much. As Lc says plenty of yummy treats and empty tum.Smile

YES!

He wasn't a small puppy at the time. Probably about 8/9 months old. But my dog Boris (big labradoodle) once peed in his training class. I offered him the chance to go outside beforehand but he didn't want to, he was probably too excited to go see his friends. Anyway, about 5 minutes into the lesson he just stood up and began peeing... And didn't stop... I swear to god it was the longest pee I'd ever see him do. It was running in rivers in all different directions and all I could do was stand and watch in disbelief while everyone else watched and giggled. I felt like it was never going to stop! Boris is not a small dog he's about the size of a standard poodle but broader so you can imagine the size of his puddles when he gets going...
I was handed a mop while the trainer took Boris to do his training exercise. Very embarrassing!

Lol I can imagine your horror at that. Marley used to dig in the water bowl and spread it all over then one night while we were all sitting talking about the dogs while they were playing he marched into the middle of where we all were and took a dump right in front of everyone.... I felt this big --> <-- and to top it of he looked so damn pleased with himself

Tip's first socialization class Empty Re: Tip's first socialization class

Post by Guest Fri Aug 23 2013, 06:24

I hope you really enjoy it - it's great watching the cuties interact the first time. Our first time at puppy school and Roxy was in a class with a terrified Yorkie, a yappy JRT and a few other smaller breeds. Roxy was the most boisterous and being a staffy other people picked up their babies and moved away until the teacher gave them hell!

Vinny on the other hand is a mommy's boy and was shy in his puppy days so he stuck close to me the first few classes and then realised everyone else's owners hand food too and he became a socialite Laughing

All great advice above - empty tum, tasty treats and toilet! Don't worry about walking on lead - you'll learn it at school. Expect Tip to be absolutely exhausted after the first lesson - it's a lot for the little ones to take in.

It might be difficult to get pics for us, but do let us know how it goes!

Just got the most disapointing news. My hubby has to work tommorow and as I can't drive we won't make it to the class Sad we do need the cash so I can't complain. Was just so looking forward to it.
