Black and tan (Rottweiler pattern/color)
Hey Guys.
I am aware that Black and Tan is an "undesirable" color according to the kennel standards, but it is my favorite, so I am very interested in knowing what makes puppies turn out like that. Is it a special combination of colours inherited by their parents which result in a litter of black and tan or is it an old gene that is triggered at random from puppy to puppy?
If there was some way of knowing that a farther of color A and mother of color B usually results in black and tan, it would make it easier for me to get my hands on such a puppy
BTW it was STAFFIEXXX' kodi which got me interested.
Cheers

It's certainly inherited, and unfortunately it's been inherited by crossing in the ancestors. That's why it's 'undesirable'!

It will only come from bad breeding. I personally do not like them they are not good for the breed as a whole as they can be very dominant genes and will if left to breed all other the place create a lot of undesirable dogs. Avoid. If you like the colour, get a breed that is is desirable in.

Thanks for your quick replies.
Maybe you could elaborate a little on why Black and Tans are not good for the breed, I don't understand how it affects the breed or the dog? To me it is just a color.

Black & Tan is a very dominant colour pattern. If it became an acceptable pattern/colour then every litter bred with one B & T parent will have all B & T pups! It'll eventually make all other coat patterns/colours rare!

Okay - I didn't know that. That answers my question then
Thanks!

Yep exactly. And even if one pup came out solid, it is likely to only have b&t pups itself. Very bad for the breed. This is why there are only black and tan rottis and dobes.
