Dew claw removal
last year we had this little episode...
https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t25030-dew-claw
it later transpired they had just taken the nail bit off, and it grew back. problem was she's never walked properly on it since, so it hasnt worn down, and i knew it was only a matter of time before it happened again.
which turned out to be yesterday. while executing a perfect tight turn on grass, she's managed to catch it, tear it half off again and crack it, so its causing her loads of grief.
we've been up to the vets tonight, and decided that as its only 8 months since the last time, shes having the full claw removed tomorrow
and a quick pic of the offending claw...

Re: Dew claw removal
tomorrow janey, and originally i thought the same. they gave her a shot of metacam to ease the pain so now she's dozing, i'll take her for an easy walk later when the route will be quiet.
also, it turns out she's lost a kilo since 6 weeks ago, given her slight build thats quite a lot!

Sorry I just re read and it and saw tomorrow. I hope all goes well, its a shame that she has to go through it a second time, but lets hope thats the end of it. I wouldn't worry about the weight tbh, Moo can go up and down everytime we are the vets Xx

Re: Dew claw removal
all went well, she's home but feeling really sorry for herself. she'll settle for five minutes then move and start over again, and i would take a pic of the fab pink bandage but every time i get the camera out she freaks out. first place she went to when i got her inside was straight to my room, so i'm sat watching movies with her and keeping her calm.
cheers for all the well wishes ad comments guys, i'll try and get some pics later on

Re: Dew claw removal
finally settled, managed to get a quick couple of snaps. i'm guessing the smaller badage was for a drip during the op, and could probably come off, but it looks like an 80's sweat band so i'm gonna be mean and leave it on
"feel sorry for me"
the last one was ten minutes ago, and she still hasnt moved

Re: Dew claw removal
all things considered she's been really good today, work was quiet so i managed to get the day off to keep an eye on her, and all she's done all day is slept. mostly on me.
doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, she's leaving the bandages alone, eating well etc. these dogs are almost indestructable!

Re: Dew claw removal
fresh update! about 8 onwards last night she began to get really unsettled, i'm guessing the painkillers had worn off and it was aching. no wimpering or noises, but she'd lie down, and two minutes later trying a new position. i wouldnt mind but this went on all night, and as she's in my room (and mainly on my bed) it meant i got next to no sleep, and she got pretty much none
today she's been mostly settled, i popped home at lunch and she was ok, but if she stands for a minute or so in one spot she'll llift her bad paw for a few seconds, but she's walking on it happy enough. now its past dinner time, and i'm guessing the painkillers have worn off again, she's getting restless, but not in an excited sort of way, just uncomfortable. i guess i'll have to curl up with her again and watch a movie or two. what a shame...

Re: Dew claw removal
Don't know how I missed this before, but have finally caught up with poor little Lola.
Dew claws, beside being unsightly, are a damn nuisance. I DO wish that breeders would snip the little blighters off within 2 days of birth, when they are little more than a bit of gristle and soon recovered from. Instead, so many dogs have to go through what poor Lola has gone through, and still is.
Massive HUGS to you and Lola from Kuchar and me; I hope she is soon feeling much better.

Wishing Lola a speedy recovery, it must be sore for her once the pain relief has worn off. I'm sure she will be back to normal in a few days, no worries

Re: Dew claw removal
check up at the vets tonight, and rather than redressing they decided (with a second opinion) that its healed well enough to leave open
the only instructins now are keep it clean, and the lampshade collar on if she starts to mess with it. aside from a general clean of the rest of the paw, she hasnt bothered with it, and seems to be comfortable without the bandages on, so its all good news. stitches are out next saturday, and the area looks really well, its just odd not seeing a "toe" there anymore
