Mange :(
Hiya all
I took Blaze for his injections also vet diagnosed mange which my partner and i had thought was the problem from when we got him home however after looking up online we were unsure as people say they lose fur when teething. Its demodicosis or red mange we showered him last weekend and after we got him dry he seemed to have lost alot more fur im guessing this was just because he was clean and fluffy after the shower as cant see why he would lose more because of a shower.
Then we applied the Adovcate treatment, his fur seems to be growing in a little already or maybe its just my wishful thinking however my worry is since we have applied the advocate he seems to be scratching and biting certain areas which he was not doing before and also has alot of dandruff now.
Hope i am posting this in right area sorry if not.
This is the day we picked him up
This is last week after we showered him
These are photos taken today hes due his next treatment in morning not sure if i should bathe/shower him before applying second treatment or just apply it
Could this be fur re growing as i think? Possible his immune system might be building ? As i would not think the Advocate would start working this quick.
The vet had us buy 3 treatments and said he would need at least that and we also got a fourth treatment free with the plan we signed up to.
Ugh just relised this is dog part of forum and not puppy can i move post or do i need to delete and start again ??

Re: Mange :(
So srry he got this. It is likely he got it from his mother, so i really hope you won't breed as it can be a genetic thing (mange is more likely in dogs that are prone)
As for the advocate working fast, yes it can. Ivermectin is another similar treatment but is for birds and it decreases their sores literally within a few days.

Re: Mange :(
I'm not planning to breed from him however i did ask vet if i should contact breeder for that reason and was told this type of mange is due to puppies not having an immune system and also with the added stress/anxiety of moving lets the mites that all dogs have take over but its not the type of mange that has to be reported to breeder or worry over him passing it on

Re: Mange :(
With puppy mange (demodectic mange) build his immune system ! This is key.
IMO give a vitamin B complex supplement...this will help. Along with a good grain free diet.
Advocate is ok to use - if u see the prob getting worse - go Bk to ur vet ! Ivermectin has had good results - but in hand u need to strengthen the immune system.

Re: Mange :(
I would still contact the breeder tbh. Normal puppies don't stress out so much that their immune system is affected.

Re: Mange :(
He was on pedigree puppy wet when i got him so i have weaned him onto Wainwrights puppy salmon and potato kibble and i also give him cod liver oil supplement , you think i should also add vitamin B?
Hes back at vets on Wednesday and i will see what he says about mange
Otherwise vet seemed very puppy with his progress but will keep check on that.
He also said its very common in Staffie pups for this type of mange but i have never had a staffie pup before so unsure is why i posted on here
Is Wainwrights a good food ?? I dont see it on list provided im in uk had thought about pero but do not want to change him again as he seems happy and healthy on this food however if its not a good enough food then would look around
Main Flavour:Salmon 26%
Ingredient(s):
Salmon Fish Meal (26%), Potato Starch (17%), Potato Protein (13%), Sorghum (13%), Barley (11%), Rapeseed Oil (7%), Whole Linseed (5%), Sugar Beet Pulp (4%), Minerals (includes Kelp 250mg/kg, Yucca Extract 200mg/kg, Marigold Meal 50mg/kg, Rosemary Extract 5mg/kg), Alfalfa (1%), Seaweed (0.4%).
Additives: Nutritional Additives; Vitamin A 21,000IU/kg, Vitamin D3 2,000IU/kg, Vitamin E (a -Tocopherol) 500mg/kg, Zinc Chelate of Amino Acids Hydrate 200mg/kg, Ferrous Sulphate Monohydrate 167mg/kg, Manganese Oxide 156mg/kg, Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate 97mg/kg, Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate 30mg/kg, Sodium Selenite 9mg/kg, Calcium Iodate Anhydrous 3.3mg/kg, Calcium 2.9mg/kg, Phosphorous 1.36mg/kg, Omega 6 4.57mg/kg, Omega 3 1.29mg/kg.
Sorry Hayley maybe i worded that wrong the vet said because he is a pup and has not built an immune system is why when they get stressed/anxious the mites can take over

If you think your pup had the mange when you picked him up from the breeder, then you should informthe breeder. Although many pups get a small dose of demodectic mange it's normally very slight & clears up without treatment. If he already had it, he's likely to have got it from his mum, and she should not be bred from again.

Actually it's common in all breeds of puppy - all dogs have the demodectic mite, but they are kept in check by a strong immune system. Puppies take a while to get their immune systems strong so occasionally the mites will multiply & cause small bald patches. If that's all they are, they don't need treatment. But if they get large patches & become sore then they need to be treated. Advocate will work, but it's very harsh & could create some irritation. Try to stop your pup scratching as he'll hurt himself.

Yes, it's a good, mid range, mid price food. Your pup'll do well on it! But as already said, a vitamin B supplement may help with the mange problem.

Re: Mange :(
Thank you for the advise and reassurance about his food.
I will pick up vitamin B when im out shopping later.
His patch is as pictured and deffo fur coming back in already ( i have looked online and seen some terrible pictures of dogs with mange think that worried me more ) i was just worried about him and would not like to think it bothered him, the scratching he does i have noticed when hes asleep he never scratches which is confusing as it there was something wrong i would think it would bother him then also.
We were at vets couple of days after we picked him up as he was 9 weeks when we got him so maybe his fur would have come back without the treatment we will never know now as i have used the treatment now.

That's very hard to say. The patch you've shown in the pic looks a fair bit bigger than the normal puppy mange ones, which are usually only about the size of a 20p piece or maybe slightly larger.
So it's quite possible that it wouldn't have gone away on its own.

Re: Mange :(
Demodex can be awful, Daisy had it really badly just after I got her, but generally in pups they can get rid of it easily and if you work on the immune system he should be fine

Re: Mange :(
If it becomes an ongoing problem there are other supplements that you can try too, but as he's young I wouldn't worry about it too much at the moment

Re: Mange :(
Does Daisy still suffer from it ?
From the pic she does not look like she does
It's good to be able to come on here and get advice from people that know about it instead of just searching the internet and seeing terrible stories/ pictures

Re: Mange :(
Thankfully Daisy is clear now
But because of having it at her age it may always be a problem, the vet said to look at it like she is in remission it may come back or it may not! She is a recsue so I don't know her history but she's obviously been breed from dogs that shouldn't be breed from and a result has a defficient immune system and heath problems You would not believe from the pictures now but at Xmas she was almost totally bald, all over!!
It is alot more common for pups to have it and generally they recover well and may never have it again.

Re: Mange :(
Louby had mange when we got her - as a stray in november. It has taken us ages to get rid of it, and we are due to back for another skin scrape to see if it has gone (the last scrape showed it wasnt there, so fingers crossed). Louby had secondry infection too so we had to have her on antibiotics. We had to bath her in some treatment, cant remember the name, it turned the water a cloudy white, louby hates baths so it was horrnedous to try and do, but from the bits that hit her skin, it seemed to work, but it kept coming back, in the end we were given Panamex, which is actually used for cattle, so we had to sign a waiver as i dont think it is regulated or something like that..but that did work, and she had no side effects from the Panamex.
Good luck with getting her rid of it...its a pants thing to have going on.
