Worms question...
I have noticed that Lana has live worms in her poo today! I pick it up all the time and pretty sure this is a new thing, she has also been dragging her butt since yesterday. She was flead and wormed at the vets last Monday so isnt due for worming again, not sure if this is normal or not? Should I treat her again myself or take her back to vet which wont be until Tuesday now?

Re: Worms question...
Do you know what wormer the vet gave?
Personally I would give another round of the wormer - you can worm every two weeks up and to three months anyway and a little extra will do no harm. It does need to be a good quality wormer though (I am sure there will be others who can recommend a brand that is available where you are) and the dose needs to be correct for her weight to be effective.

Re: Worms question...
Hi thanks for the reply, the wormer the vet used was Stronghold. Will it be safe to use a shop bought wormer?

Re: Worms question...
That is not a brand I am familiar with unfortunately - it may not be a brand that we have here in Australia.
I personally use Drontal all wormer for Chiquito, my understanding is that you have Milbemax available to you as well which is also a great wormer.
In regards to shop bought wormer, I personally choose to use brands from the vet - the store bought ones (or at least the ones here) usually cost a little less but are not effective.

Re: Worms question...
This was a recent thread from the Staffy Chat area - the original question was about lung worm, however it does note the brands that people use and may be helpful

Re: Worms question...
Chiquito got quite an upset tummy when he was about 13 weeks old, he had been wormed 6 days before and although there was no signs of worms, the vets advice was to worm him again ... as long as you are not doing it all of the time, a little extra dose is better than the worms, especially when they are little.
Do remember to make sure the dose is correct for her weight though

Re: Worms question...
Worms come out when the wormer is given so this is perfectly normal and means it has worked in detaching the worms. Don't overworm. As for store bought wormers, many make dogs very ill as they are just rubbish and i hugely recommend not using them.

Re: Worms question...
As Hayley said you only ever see worms in the poo when the wormer is working and is nothing to worry about.
It can go on for a few days depending on how many are in there, i would wait 3-4 weeks before doing it again but pups do need more regular worming than adults.

Re: Worms question...
Thanks for all the advice I appreciate it I managed to get some Drontal from the pharmacy in Boots and gave her a small dose. Also, one last question, my vet said I should take to the vet for monthly worming and flea treatment, is there any reason why I can't do this myself providing I get decent product of course?

Re: Worms question...
Unless there is evidence of fleas, I wouldn't unnecessarily flea. I also wouldn't worm monthly but thats just me! I don't use chemical wormer/fleaer on my dogs and haven't seen anything. I only worm 3-4 times a year.
Sierra has only been wormed twice with Milbemax when she was 8 weeks and 12 weeks.

I wouldn't worm a youngster more than fortnightly, and ideally it should only be monthly unless there's a really bad worm burden.
What you've described is totally normal for a puppy worming, and shows that the wormer you've used is working. Stronghold is ok, although I prefer Milbemax. However, I'm not sure that Milbemax should be used for pups.

She should be wormed monthly until 6 months old and then every three months with a quality womer (not the over-the-counter ones like Bob Martins). Vets will tell you to use an all in one flea/worm spot on treatment, but I really don't like them. They are full of very harsh chemicals which seep into your dog's system through the skin. Unless your dog has fleas I wouldn't use it. Just use a quality wormer that includes some protection against lungworm every 3 months.
Milbemax is very effective and most dogs don't suffer any side effects, although they may get soft poo for a day or two after taking it.

Re: Worms question...
Yeh it was a flea/worm spot on treatment that the vet administered, like I said I did give her a small dose of the Drontal I got this morning, I have been keeping an eye on her all day and she seems fine but I wont treat her again for a month.
I guess it was a shock reaction at seeing all those worms and I got the ewwww ewwww factor, I washed all her bedding and mine cos she snuggles with me early in the morning

Lol, dont worry its a common thing for puppies to have alot of worms which is why they are done more frequently than adults. It gets alot less as they get older and I cant remember the last time I saw any in either of my two's poops. Once you get a regular worming regime going you see hardley if any at all
