People these days...
Today we were walking and a man said something about the breed as a general being vicious when we walked past to his children and moved them away then later on Ebony was off lead on the field as usual, we were running around, playing and what not and some men in a van drove past and were beeping their horn and shouted "That thing should be on a lead". I know Ebony can't understand but I felt so bad on her behalf, I just sat down and gave her cuddles! On the way back home though there was a group of children about 6-9 years old on the grassy bit of the path and ebony was on long lead as usual, so I called her back to me and the children asked if they could stroke her so we stayed there for a good 10-15 minutes with these kids! They sat down on the floor and she was wagging her tail and was super duper gentle; she loved it! She sat down with them then lay down on the floor for tummy scratches with her head in the lap of one of the children! They were all thrilled to bits with her as she was licking their hands, rubbing her head on them and everything! Even threw out a few paws when asked too Really made me smile! They said she was like a big cat I just wish those men could've seen her with those children, she's got such a gentle nature. She adores my younger nephew too. Sorry for the rant but we always have narrow minded people looking, and making remarks at us/her just because of how she looks when she's such a well behaved girl with a darling nature. We haven't had anything for a while besides a man a few days ago being quite rude to us when I walked ebony back, and made her sit and wait while a dog passed and told him she was in training. We do get our nice comments ect from day to day but bad comments always put such a damper on the day. I wasn't too upset about the comments after she'd played with those kids though
So I just thought I'd ask; what comments do your dogs get when you're out?

Great to hear Dave, it's always nice when people make good remarks about our babies
Funny looks annoy me just as much Sazzle!

it's mainly the eyes that do the talking, the sideways glances & dirty looks, but we also get lots of positives too

Glad to hear you get a lot of positives! I think people don't mind saying things to me because I'm small and pretty young!

Poor Logan gets awful comments a lot of the time for his shape and general appearence.
Filthy stares are common and I do get the occassional nasty comment, however I can normally think of something very sarcastic to say quite quickly and make sure to make them aware they are morons.
Don't worry about those van men, they'd have been better off going and doing some work instead of shouting at a girl playing with her pet dog.

We used to get quite a few negative remarks about Dempsey, but most people round here know him well by now & either like him or avoid him!
When we got Bandit very few people where we lived had ever seen a stafford so we mainly got very interested questions about him. He was da, though, so we did get some nasty comments from people who had a full frontal view of his pearly white gnashers!

Aww no! Poor Logan! I'd be too scared to say anything back to them I think though Mat It's silly that people can be so rude about something they know nothing about. He seems like such a sweetie based on that other post about him licking the kids before
Wow they'd never seen a Stafford before? Where did you live before may I ask? But I'm glad Dempsey is well known now! I'm sure it stops a lot of hassle!

I'm lucky we very rarely get negative looks anymore but I know most of the people where we go, and thank fully there aren't many

Poor Shéara's always getting bad comments

Glad to hear people are being kinder with their looks towards Moo! She's such a gorgeous girl too! When it's people that know her, and her regular play mates then we get no problems it's just people who don't know her
Ah poor Shéara! At least he gets his fuss time in when people are actually stop and talk

Staffs are very common where I live (not as status dogs, just normal dogs) so I don't get any negative comments, thankfully. A couple of people have looked at me like I'm the devil or something when their dog runs up to Loki but besides that, everything's been fine. Just ignore comments like that, you know the truth

Re: People these days...
Glad to hear he's been nasty comment free! I'm sure them giving you dirty looks when they run up to play makes you just as annoyed though!

Re: People these days...
I do quite often come across people who walk past (or away) with a stony expression - no eye contact - but I have invariably found that these people either have dogs that they don't want to associate with any other dog, or their dog is DA.
Of people who DO speak, the comment is invariably "is he friendly?" (like they can't see his enthusiasticly wagging tail!) These people are always OK though when reassured "yes he's friendly, just very boisterous!".

Re: People these days...
I agree with the first part 100%, I'm sure some people have valid reasons for being quite cold about things; but other times I don't see any need for them being so crude! And the second part I get a lot too I don't mind those types of people though as they're usually excited about getting cuddles with a dog Glad to hear that you've not had anything verbal though!
Guest- Guest
Re: People these days...
Oh I've had a couple of verbals! But some people panic for the weirdest of reasons (like my dog - and theirs! - sniffing at privates).

Re: People these days...
Oh! I'm sorry to hear that People are so silly! They don't like it when Eb approaches for a sniff either! Seems like we've all been through the mill at some point unfortunately Not sure if I've commented before, but I love Kuchars' name!

! That's not so bad though, I dislike yappers too! But yeah, very Ironic indeed Carl! Sorry to hear that you've had your fair share of comments/looks too. Meg and Lola are such stunners so I'm glad you've had good comments too I still can't believe Meg is 15! She looks so good for her age!

Some people are very uptight about their dog's privates, I think to them it means s-e-x ( and their babies wouldn't be interested in THAT, would they ) and don't understand (or choose not to) that dogs of either sex want to know what the other dog's pheremones smell like, and embarrassing though it may be to them, the nether regions are where the the scent glands are - it's a dog's life!
Thank you - I'm glad you like the name Kuchar (although it was my son's choice - apparently it's some golfer). Although someone recently misheard it and thought his name was Butcher! NOT the impression we would wish to convey!

this reply really made me laugh! But yes, I agree! People look so uncomfortable when their dogs are sniffing each others bits sometimes! I had this one man pick his dog up and move it away from Ebony since it was the first time he'd ever been round a female and his head was permanently under there; his owner was very embarrassed and kept apologizing!
Ahh yes I have commented on his name before! I remember you saying he was named after a Golfer and that your kid chose it! I thought I had Oh dear That's the last thing you want people thinking he's called!

I've always had a thing about my boys conkers and been very , very proud of them , he quite likes them too it will be a shame in a year or so to see them go
Tommy quite often sorts Tilly out as she doesn't seem to be able to get all the way around there, then sorts himself out (and growls at the same time which is really funny) and then Tilly attends to Tommy too which is quite disturbing to see my little princess committing such acts but hey dogs will be dogs

Someday I have to get a video of angry Tommy noshing himself it is ssssssssssooooooooooooooo funny , we often wake up in the middle of the night thinking the 2 of them are having a little spat on the bed , they never are , Tilly has took herself off to jenny's room for a bit of peace and Tommy is having a self service on the bed , most terrible though is the amount of times we have to change the bedding , it's not been like that since we first got married

I understand completely Dave. And I'm afraid that that is one of the reasons why Kuchar is going to lose his conkers (sweet and lovely though they are) on Wednesday.

No need to apologise Lynda we are only having a larf
My boys conkers are his best feature as this is what we seem to see most of . On a dark night on the bed it is also a source of amusement for me . The OH hates to touch his conkers so when she is feeling round on the bed to see which dog is where for a snuggle I always get the laugh at that priceless moment when she has a pair in her hand

Re: People these days...
When I was walking frankie the other day on lead a JRT came out of nowhere, ran up to him and tried to bite his face Luckily frankie jumped back, and went to walk off, much to my surprise! Then it ran off and still no owner in sight. I then saw a young boy so politely asked him if he could put her on the lead because of what she did and he apologised. I heard him tell his mum and she said she didn't care! I walked off and then thought actually something needs to be said. If it was the other way round I'm sure she would of said something. When I eventually caught up with her, I politely told her what the dog had done and she walked off, so I continued to say that the dog needs to be on a lead. She turned round looked at frankie and said that he must of provoked her because it was out of character. I explained that just because he's a staffie it doesn't mean he's aggressive. I walked off biting my tongue. I then found out the next day her dog has done it before. Silly silly woman.

Re: People these days...
Mandy, I'm afraid this is all too common a story - I'm sure all on this forum could tell a similar tale. The other dog, whether on lead or off, is almost NEVER at fault (it takes a very rare owner to admit that their darling is an agressive so-and-so). And the smaller the dog, the less likely they are to admit it!

Re: People these days...
Most of the time I just bite my tongue and think at the end of the day it's their loss. All these people who misunderstand staffies are missing out on such loyal, friendly and loving dogs. We're the ones who get to have all the staffie cuddles and kisses and they spend their life obsessing about how 'dangerous' they are. It's their loss and they're the ones who are missing out!

Oh dear what a silly woman! People are so ignorant these days Sorry to hear about your encounter! I've seen plenty of stories on here about nasty dogs being off lead. I hope Frankie is/was okay!
And oh my gosh Dave, Lynda and Janey! I feel like I need to wash my eyes after that Thankfully Eb doesn't make too much noise, though she has woken me up by licking her self while banging her head into my leg or scratching the wall with her leg while she licks - and she does it for ages so I have to tell her to be quiet!
