Two Meals a Day
I've been trying for ages to get Loki down to two meals a day, but something always comes up and I end up starting again. Anyway, finally he's almost off the middle meal, but I was wondering how gradually I should lower it for him to not get hungry, and also what times to feed him?

Logan has been on two meals for ages and I don't have set times for feeding, I just feed after walks

Re: Two Meals a Day
Sophie has one meal about 8 in the morning and then her main meal between 5 and 6pm.
We always know when she's hungry in the morning because she waits at the kitchen door looking into the kitchen and then at us with a look saying where's my breakfast.

Re: Two Meals a Day
When we changed Zeus from 3 meals to 2 meals a day, I gradually halfed his middle feed into his morning and evening feed. He did wonder for a few days where his middle feed had gone but got used to it in the end.
I now feed Zeus in the morning before I go to work around 8/830am and then his evening feed around 8pm, which works well for him.
As soon as it gets to around 7.30pm, he starts going into the kitchen and sitting next to the draw where his food is, clever guy!

Re: Two Meals a Day
12 hours seems like such a long time though, he gets annoying and paces the floors if it's 30 minutes over his meal time I guess it's just a case of getting him to adjust.

Re: Two Meals a Day
I just stopped the morning feed outright. they are lazy critters though and doze all the way to lunchtime anyway so they didnt really bother. I feed at 12:30 ish and 20:00 which ties in nicley with excersise and needing the loo. the night before's feed comes out on the morning walk and lunchtime is out at night walk or later in the garden.

Re: Two Meals a Day
I would just be cruel and stop it. Give a few treats at the normal time of the middle meal.
Lexi gets once a day and at all different times, she gets a little obsessive if she is fed at the same time every day and wont settle, shes more relaxed if she doesnt knwo when it is comin lol

Am feeds can be eaten or not but I do give them, pm always guzzled. 3 meals a day can pretty much changed to 2 straight away, they soon learn to change there habits Xx

Re: Two Meals a Day
I've just put Sierra onto 2 meals a day, phased out her afternoon feed over a week or so. She'll be going down to 1 a day in a few months to tie in with Bailey!

Mine sometimes aren't bothered with breakfast, sometimes are. Either way it gets put down around 7am and evening meal around 5 or 6 pm depending on walkies.

Loki never leaves any food, and I tried stopping the middle meal straight away but he was having none of that, he was constantly crying because he knew he was missing something he'll be onto two meals in a couple of days at this rate then I think. Thanks everyone

Re: Two Meals a Day
He'll get used to it.
Elmo's been on two meals a day for a few weeks now. One day I just didn't give him lunch and increased his breakfast and dinner slightly. His meals are now about 12 hours apart.
For the first few days he was a bit put out but he soon adjusted

Molly get's one meal a day... She has a bone now and again, and a treat on a Friday. I'm surprised at the amount that feed more than one meal a day, is that normal?

The majority of people feed twice a day, morning and night. I don't know that many people who feed once a day lol! Only a couple from this forum and another forum!

One meal is fine, so long as he eats enough.

I've always been told two meals a day and that's what all our dogs have been on, but suppose it doesn't matter how many meals as long as it's the right amount

Re: Two Meals a Day
We always fed Taz twice a day . After his morning walk ( 8am ish ) and then again at 4pm .
I think he would have been the grumpiest dog ever if I had cut him to one meal a day ... He inhaled his food !!

somedays he doesn't touch it, somedays he'll eat half, :-) but I usually put 1cup of dry and either a tin of wet or the frozen fish you get from pets@home

Re: Two Meals a Day
Interesting, I used to feed her first thing but she wouldn't have it.. She tended to leave it till we eat and she follows us. Which I was told was the right way, us being the pack leaders etc.. So now she has it with us, well it goes down then but she will still wait till we finish before she has hers, she tends to sit quietly till we're done then she will wonder over to her bowl, sometimes she will eat it all, others she will leave some for later..

Feeding two meals a day instead of one large one helps to prevent bloat - which can be potentially fatal.
I just stopped the middle meal outright. Dempsey now gets his breakfast (smaller meal than the evening) anything from 8am until 1pm (depending if I'm at work or not) and then his second meal is around 5pm.

Whether you eat before her or after her won't make any difference to her, other than she may leave you alone while you're eating if she's already had hers!
The Pack Leader Theory has been proved wrong, even by the man who wrote the original book about it!

Re: Two Meals a Day
Gary is on dry food but still very much growing hes only 7 months so he just has his bowl filled in the morning, and then at night he eats the same time as us.
he just eats as and when he wants really, we know when hes hungry because he runs into the livingroom with his bowl in his mouth.
