Over Excesive Biting
Hi
Anyone else having the same thing with their puppy where they are constantly biting not just nipping but biting.
I have tried telling him no and asking buster to sit this works for 5 seconds.
I have tried turning my back on him which results in buster jumping up my back.
I also have tried yelping like a dog work but this seems to excite him more.
Does anyone else have any other ideas?
Thanks

Re: Over Excesive Biting
Tilly did this and we had to resort to picking her up, not speaking and putting her outside. She would throw a strop and bang the back door but we waited until she calmed down and then let her back in and ignored her for another 5 minutes or so before breaking the silence by attempting some fuss.
The key with them is consistency, whatever method you use then all the household need to do it

Re: Over Excesive Biting
Zeus did this when he was younger, I tried all of what you have and none of it worked. The only thing that worked, and the most effective, was to pick him up and put him in another room (more effective if its outside in the garden) as punishment. I gave him a few minutes in that room and let him back in (don't leave it too long or he'll forget why he was in there in the first place!).
There were times that I literally had to do it 10 times in a row, in out, in out, in out, but he soon got the message. I've used this technique for all unwanted behaviour and its served me well!

Thank you for your advice I think this will be my next step with him.
I knw he doesn't mean to hurt us and his only being loving and laying and his teeth are extra sharp at the moment but his drawn blood on m partner 3 times now and I don't want a dog who is always biting.

Sounds like you are doing the right thing. It just takes a bit of time and consistancy from everyone the pup is around

I think because he has been so good in other aspects like toilet outside, sitting and sleeping on his own I expect him to stop the bits as quick as he learned these things.

It is normal, from what I remember we would just say 'no' and then shove and toy in his mouth and then praise the toy chewing.
It took a while though, all puppies do it

When laying with buster we both have been putting a toy in his mouth and giving him praise for biting the toy instead.
He is currently in a time out.

Could he also be teething? If so plenty of frozen treats of bits of ice will help

Re: Over Excesive Biting
Yep. Loki once sank his teeth into me and I was bleeding for like 30 minutes it left a scar...and yet he was just playing no wonder dogs got mad at him. Anyway, stick with one training method and keep consistent with it. Trying different ones a lot might confuse him. Say no and turn your back on him and ignore him, and if he carries on, put him in another room. Only for a little while, even a minute will be enough. You might need to do it A LOT at first, but eventually they understand.

Re: Over Excesive Biting
Sounds like he is coming along fine. The biting will stop if you are consistent with him. Staffy pups just don't realise their own strength or the power of their bite. As you say, he doesn't mean to hurt you, it's just rough play.
Good Luck.

Re: Over Excesive Biting
The little time outs seem to work last night so think me and my partner are going to stick with that with buster.
Hoping as well when we start to go out and people want to approach him he doesn't want to nip them.
Fingers crossed he will calm down on the nipping by then.
So far his cut Jons eat, lip and thumb all three have bled but its because his teeth are little razors.
Will give him some ice cubes tonight see if it soothes his gums.

Re: Over Excesive Biting
This sounds so familiar to me, Katy can be a right bugger for biting.I know its play but you should see the state of my hands! saying No doesn't do a thing, neither does yelping or standing up ignoring her because she will just jump up to bite me. Her favourite trick at the moment is to pinch my skin between her front teeth, she does it so sneakly that you dont know until you feel the pain I will have a go at the time out, it worked well on her scrounging at dinner times

We have worked it out that when Katy starts her biting it is usually because she is getting tired. She's like a kid who gets stroppy & is fighting against going to sleep

Re: Over Excesive Biting
Katie and Jon, I have only just realised that Gypsy is one week younger exactly than Buster as she was born on the 23rd November 2012
I was having a huge problem in the first week and a half with Gypsy drawing blood when nipping, still have the scars. I tried ignoring her which only appeared to encourage her. I tried isolating her in time out, which didn't work because each time I let her out - she would play up all over again and would be super nippy the following day. I tried replacing my fingers and limbs with a toy which is a temporary measure only. It's a little challenging because we want to transition her to outside as we live in Australia so it would be cruel of us to lock her outside as a punishment because eventually this is where she will end up anyway. My friend who has a Schnauzer now aged 9 illuminated the situation for me as she too had gone through the same with her dog as a pup.
Gypsy had run of the house for the first week. Only carpeted bedrooms were banned but the rest of the house (timber flooring for main area or tiled bathrooms) - she had free reign and no restrictions. So it was suggested to me that I should designate one small area to her where she has her bed) and keep her in that area by putting her on a leash. Since I have put this notion in action - she has improved tremendously. I ensure she has enough toys to keep her occupied and entertained, she eats and drinks outside, she is walked every day now as she is vaccinated, I play run and fetch with her for up to 1/2 an hour each day and she is for the most part a different dog. She nips much less now as she is expending more energy on other activities. We also give her a bacon ear to chew on each day just whilst she is going through the teething issue and this appears to help as well.

Re: Over Excesive Biting
This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, but it just annoys me that people buy a stafford puppy and expect it to get out of all its natural behaviours in a few days. Puppies play with their siblings (and later, other dogs) by biting; it's totally natural and normal. What we have to do is teach them that this 'behaviour' is not acceptable to humans.
Tapping noses, shouting, restricting to one small area are not the best ways to deal with it.
If done properly, the 'yelp' & ignore or the "No" and ignore will work withing 2 or 3 weeks and you'll have a much more well adjusted pup at the end of it.
