Staffie - Allergies
Hiya
Just wondered if anyone could help or give me some advice. I have a 2 and half year old female staffie who has really bad allergies. SHe is on piriton and ive changed her food. She allergic to lots of stuff and at the moment she is having a massive flare up on her face and scratching all her mouth/eye and when she has scratched and made herslef bleed she keeps knocking off the scabs - She seems so sad bless her
Any ideas that could help - i dont wwant to put her on full time steriods as she is soo young really

Re: Staffie - Allergies
Hi, what type of food are you giving her? As Bruno has a sensitive belly and intolerant to chicken and chicken oils. He's just been put on antibitics for his skin and piriton and a wash. They couldn't give him steriods as he has been being sick, taking him back to vets next week as he was also running a temperature. Bruno is on James Well beloved food, but emailed Arden grange and they sent me a few samples and going to try the fish4dogs and their samples are £4 for about 6 or 7 just to try and looks like good quality. Hope this helps. Go see your vet and ask for a skin wash.

Re: Staffie - Allergies
Feeding wafcol salmon and potaoe as she can't have maize, wheat, rice as she is allergic so I am really good with reading up on what she has. Wafcol dry food and then of an evening natures menu chicken and potatoe. I have a wash but can't let it get near her eyes N also the wipes they have given me she don't like she runs away I think they sting. I'm taking her to the vets 2nit as she has taken a chunk out of her face. It's so bad sometimes I have to up te piriton to 6 tablets a day x

Not as much as you'd think. If you have a bit of freezer space you can get all you need online for a month for a very reasonable amount.
Have a look here...

Re: Staffie - Allergies
So sorry to hear of the problems your dog is having. You have had a lot of good advice on here already, but if you could post a photo or two it might just help us advise further, if we can.

Re: Staffie - Allergies
We had the same issue with Suki. We went to the vet and had blood drawn for an allergy test. After we knew everything she was allergic to we just tried different foods until we found what worked best.

Re: Staffie - Allergies
blood test is the best way because if your not sure on which products shes got allergy on its like on lottery you cant treat a dog or human if you don't know whats the reason why. plus you can save her from suffering, cause it may takes ages until you will find out by changing the food

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Hope you manage to find something that works for you. If you decide to change her food do so gradually to avoid an upset tummy.

Re: Staffie - Allergies
Morning,
Thank you all very much for your advice.
I have had blood test's done which I found out she is allergic to Rice, Maize, Corn, Wheat and Soy so I have to be very careful with what I feed her. She is also allerguic to grass seed and flea salivia. But I rule this out by keeping up with her flea treatment. The grass seed I cant do much about but that normally effects her paws which I have wipes ti clean them with. This has been her face this time - She was in the vets the same time last year with the same complaint - I wonder if it is a seasonal thing (Jan-Feb is very low for a enviromental allergy).
I took her to the emergency vets abiout 4 weeks ago and they gave her a steriod jab but some different antibiotics that she usualy(cheaper ones) & i am just wondering weather if they wasnt strong enough to fight the infection and thats why it hasnt cleared up. I took her back to our Normal vet on Tues night and she is on a mild steriod for 7 days and her normal antibiotics and yesterday she looked a whole lot better the redness had gone down and also the swelling. SOOOOO fingers crossed we are getting on top of it for once.
The vet has said if it comes back again soon I may have to look into putting her on steriods full time but I am really worried as they can cause other issues i.e. kindney/lung issues - She is only 2 and half and I really dont want to put her on them but then I am not sure if I am beig selfish as she suffers really bad with her skin problems...... What would people advise?
Thank you all for lisitening its just frustrating as she cant tell me whats wrong

Re: Staffie - Allergies
To be honest, you've tried just about everything. The only other thing I can suggest is going on to raw feeding, have you thought about that?

Re: Staffie - Allergies
Hi and Welcome
If she has sensitive skin you may also need to change your washing powder, fabric conditioner, and any floor cleaning products,
My Ella had trouble when she was young as well as watching her diet all the cleaning products we use are none bio and unscented etc, and she is fine now.
Hope she gets well soon

Re: Staffie - Allergies
I wash all Jessie's stuff in non bio but i may have to wash all of our clothes in it coz she generally likes to get up on the sofa for a cuddle with us so I am going to do this. I also was using shake and vac on the carpet which I will stop using. Thank you
Im just really pleased that these tabets have been working so far xxx
