Pain Tolerance?????
I wanted to ask probably a silly question so please excuse my ignorance, naivety and stupidity........ But do staffs have a high pain tolerance?
I just took Honey to the vet for her last vaccination!!!! Another two weeks and we are out and about!!!! The vet said we need to watch her for signs of heat stroke as we live in oz, her pain threshold and not exerting her as she will not stop and has no recognition of when she is tired or hot. I am not disagreeing with the vet by any means just would like some more info/advice on this or if anyone else has had experience of knows anything about this????

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
Yes they have a massive pain threshold and always something to be aware of. In the smallest to the largest of things Xx

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
Yes, they do have a high pain threshold. That doesn't mean that they don't feel the same levels of pain as other dogs, just that they have a higher tolerance of pain & tend not to show it.

Thanks- for your advice! Good to know. Not that I think honey is in pain but need to keep this in mind (hopefully not!!) but just in case for future reference.

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
Yeah they do. I've seen Loki run into a metal gate head first and just carry on running...meanwhile I'm almost crying just because he headbutted me they're insane.

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
Yes they do and being aware of that is a good thing. They will push through the pain sometimes and can end up hurting or injuring themselves even more.

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
Oh yea they do! Our previous staff had 3 knee operations due to trauma then a luxating patella from growth problems due to the first injury. When he did all of these injuries he hardly even showed the pain, we noticed due to occasional shivering and more constant licking of his chops.. Poor little buddy. Even our vet was impressed with his threshold, saying when he was examined that most dogs would not be happy, but our little bud was happy just licking his hand.. Amazing, crazy doggies!

Our 2 regularly crash into things and just carry on. Our vet did say their pain threshold is high

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
Yes they really do, Rocky got a bramble thorn in his leg this morning, which I didn't notice until we got back after the walk. It was only a small one but still must have been annoying if nothing else, it did come out easy enough though.

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
Yes they don't show that their in pain often, unless they're really really in pain.
My boy jumped of a big thing to get his ball (which he loves and does anything for it), unless of going around he went straight and jumped of massive steps, my girlfriend was already in tears thinking he was hurt but then we seen him coming back to us with the ball on his mouth crazy he is, just watch out if you think your puppy hurt herself doing whatever, you should go to the vets and see what they say and what they can do.

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
If a staffy is showing obvious signs of pain, then that's real pain.
Normal run of the mill stuff like smashing head first into walls, or getting nails and thorns stuck in paws is considered a fun warm-up to them.

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
I recently found this out the hard way very sadly. We have recently had crazy weather and before it got insane i.e flooded, tress down etc I left her with a pigs ear to get the essentials- milk bread etc. 15 mins at the max. When I got home she was muddy and limping.
I rang the vet. The period in which I was waiting before I could get into the vet was 15mins- may I say was the longest period to wait. She was crying, licking her leg and going to sit in isolated rooms instead of usually around with us!!! My heart was breaking!!!
After a full check up it was sprained and she is on anti inflammatory's!!! She has made a good recovery after two days of sleep and rest she is much better but we have now got a puppy that has cabin fever as we are flooded in!!!!

Re: Pain Tolerance?????
Bandit almost tore his dew claw off while playing outside as a pup and didn't even make a sound. Only reason I realized was I saw blood on the floor when we came in the house. Made me paranoid for a while and would check him from nose to tail every time we went out for the next bit. He's nine now and lets me know when something is bugging him, which I am grateful for.
