Stud?
Does anyone know if the rumours are true that once a dog has been used for stud thier personallity changes? Will they behave differntly or become more dominant?? Scent marking etc? Just wondering whether to let sid mate or not as he is well behaved now and don't want to change him!

Re: Stud?
I don't think it makes any difference whatsoever. Don't forget, before you use a dog at stud you build him up with high protien food & he becomes quite hyper & eager. Afterwards, you scale it down & they just slot back into their old rutine!
The only difference is that they may take more interest in females who are nearing their season.

Re: Stud?
i think like with everything it depends on the dog in question. Some dogs im sure do have a major issues just like mated * etc but in most cases i would of thought its not to much of a big deal in terms of personality changes......in terms of overbred staffs though.........thats a different kettle of fish lol x

Re: Stud?
psychology wise if you think about the natural behaviour of dogs only the alpha's are allowed to mate so yes it can become dominant.

Re: Stud?
yeh that's a big factor!! Don't want more in the kennels! But then sid Is in great shape and think people would be intersted and if the people are decent and will look after thier new pups?? Oh I don't know, not something I'm too interested in just asking incase I ever do!

I think they're too far removed from the wild, and mating dominance is not an issue.

I'm not talking about wolves here i'm talking about strays/wild dogs they go around in packs they have alpha's only the alpha's mate, how can dogs be too far removed from the wild, sure their socialised but they still have their natural behaviours.

Re: Stud?
Most domestic/feral dog packs are very loosely formed. Any male dog will mate a female given the chance. The only thing that stops them is if another male chases them away. Let's not have this argument again........please?

Re: Stud?
Mmmmm can only say you know if you have a dominant dog when its a puppy my home was chosen for my boy as the breeder knew that he was the dominant one of the litter, the girl I had would keep him grounded as she was really chilled and laid back.
So what im meaning to say is just because hes been used at stud its not changed him anyway, but hes never humped anything for humping sake hes only interested in girls when there in season.
I have to say though we have some nasty heditary diseases out there and the good breaders are trying to eradicate the gene so health tests a must if you care about the breed.

That's what I mean - the fact that a dog has mated won't change his character. And yes, health tests for stud & brood bitch are an absolute must.
