Re: Broken dew claw!!
only a few hours to go Kev , maybe give her a few treats to help her take her mind off it , if she needs some pain relief the vet will administer it so there isn't a lot you can do I'm afraid

Re: Broken dew claw!!
A broken dew claw will bleed like a pig, but dont be alarmed.
My male broke his, the dew claw was pointing in the opposite direction.
With his i never bandaged it, as the fibres from the bandage would snag the claw and caused more discomfort.
He pulled his own claw off during the night and was fine after that.
Dew claws can get infected, so its important to keep the area clean and if need be go to the vets who will just pull the claw off and give a long acting antibiotic jab.
Once removed the quick will shrink back into the toe but slowly a new nail will grow back.

Re: Broken dew claw!!
Moo has done hers twice now and as Denise said don't be alarmed about the blood.
I did take Moo to the vets as I was so worried and they bandaged it up. Obviously thats not ideal for walking so she had a drip bag tied around it to stop it from getting wet.
TBH vet couldn't do much more than I could do anyway, so keep it clean and keep walks down so it can heal Xx

Re: Broken dew claw!!
Same here. When Dempsey broke his the first time the vet just snipped it off & gave him some anti-bs. The second time it broke just under the skin right at the base, so he had to go in & be sedated so they could take it away properly. It still grew back again, though!

Re: Broken dew claw!!
Thanks everyone:)
phoned the vet and explained the situation. advised i just keep it clean using salt water solution. have also been aplying antiseptic but trying to bandage her foot has been difficult. she winces in pain and will wiggle free and run off.have also tried using a sock but it isnt easy!
Have to keep an eye on it and avoid infection and it should be ok.
Will have to take her to the vet if she is still in discomfort.
She can put weight on it and has been walking ok. isnt her usual playfull self thuogh:( think she is feeling sory for herself...

Re: Broken dew claw!!
poor girlie ! yes they are very painful and bleed like crazy..
if it happens again ( though hopefully it won't ) to stop the bleeding you can (try to ) put the claw in cornflour..that sort of seals it up and can stop the bleeding ..of course it is alot easier when it is just a normal claw not a dew claw! I have tried this and it worked!
