Overweight Puppy?
Hi everyone
I've not been on here since just before we brought Conan home, We had to move the computer upstairs to make way for his crate and not bothered setting it up again properly
He's now almost 12 weeks old and a little super star taking him for his first walk tomorrow, so really excited for that! I'll post some pictures once we've set the PC back up.
Anyway... When we took him for his injections last week he weighed in at 7.5kg at just under 11 weeks, he'd put on 2 kg's in 2 weeks. The vet didnt say anything about him being overweight she just said he looks a big boy for 11 weeks and then joked that he was going to be huge when he's older.
I went to my friends house last night and she has one of Conans litter mates and he looks so tiny, you'd think there was at least 4 weeks between them both.
I've been following the guidelines for feeding him and apart from a couple of treats now and then he doesnt have anything else. But I've just looked up online and it says he should only be weighing about 5kg?
What did everyone elses puppy weigh at 11/12 weeks, not sure if I'm being paranoid or if I should put him on a diet?

Re: Overweight Puppy?
Our puppy wiehged 5 kg when she went to the vet at 12 weeks. The best thing I read about the weight is that if you can see the ribe that they are underweight and if you can just feel them by gently running you fingers over them they are ok. If you have to prod to feel the ribs they could be overweight. Hope this helps. Food guides for me tend to overfeed the puppy.

Re: Overweight Puppy?
you can't go from guidelines , there is no such thing as they all go off different sizes , can you post some pictures ?? My boy is big and I seen to recall a similar weight at that age , here's a pic of Tommy for comparison

Re: Overweight Puppy?
He looks a similar size to your dog on that photo and you can feel his ribs without doing any prodding. I think I might cut back on his food a little but I suppose some dogs are just bigger than others. He doesn't look "fat" just chunky like most staffy pups.
I'll have a moan at OH tonight for him to set the PC up so I can post pictures.

Re: Overweight Puppy?
Obi was 5kg at 12 weeks. He's 23 weeks now and weighs in at 14.2kg. He's put on nearly 3kg in 4 weeks some are just bigger than others if you can still see the last 2 ribs then I wouldn't worry. I wouldn't hold his food back or put him on a diet unless the vets have said so.

Re: Overweight Puppy?
Our pup is only 9 weeks old and she weighs 4.6 kg already and has been bred by myself so I know she wont be huge. I think the weight varies greatly as they grow. I wouldn't really worry about it til she/he gets to about 6 months

Re: Overweight Puppy?
I don't think there's much to worry about. Puppies grow a lot and they grow at different rates, so guidelines differ dog to dog. If the vet hasn't said he's overweight, then there's obviously nothing to worry about. I'm sure if a diet change was needed, it'd be pointed out to you.

I think it's hard to tell when they are little. I always thought Cal's sister was a moose compared to Callie and now at 8 months Cal is actually the bigger of the two.

Re: Overweight Puppy?
Hard to tell tbh, they grow at different rates, he may have just had q growth spurt. Once u start walking him u will prolly find it will all balance out x
At such a sensitive age personally I wouldn't under feed him. Follow the guidelines of the food u have and gentle exercise in hand with his age and u can't go wrong. X

Re: Overweight Puppy?
Don't get hung up on weight. They all grow at different speeds & some are naturally bigger than others, just like kids! If he's lively & happy, you can feel his ribs but not see them, then he's perfect!

Re: Overweight Puppy?
I definately wouldn't put him on a diet at that age. Just let him grow and see where he is at about 6 months or so. The walks will help out greatly as well

Re: Overweight Puppy?
I have not got a scooby what lexi weighed. But unless he is breathless and looks lethargic its likely he isn't overweight. Puppies grow so fast that in 2 weeks he will be skin and bone and up to your knee! lol

Re: Overweight Puppy?
noah is 9 weeks and 4,5kg and would eat until he burst if i let him, i think once he's had his last jab and starts going out he''ll be fine, noah looks quite a slim boy so i'm not worried

Re: Overweight Puppy?
Sounds spot on, my pup Dexter is 13 weeks and weighed in at 5.8 at the vet yesterday and she said his weight was perfect.
