Is my puppy overweight?

Post by Freedomisi on Wed Nov 18 2015, 16:39

Hey Guys,

I have a 10 week old (11 weeks on Friday) Staffy pup named Lola, I just weighed her and she is 6kg. Is she a normal weight for her age?

Hi welcome to the forum, my Buddy was just over 6kg at ten weeks - he is 16.5 at 9 months now.. depends on their build but Buddy isn't overweight as far as the vets concerned - girls can be a little lighter than males.. show us a picture of your little girl

Hey, I attempted to uploaded pictures, but can't seem to figure it out!
I uploaded some pictures on Instagram though - My username is Freedomisi - I can't seem to link that either?

Edit: I just uploaded a pic as my avatar - perhaps that will help?

My little girl is 17/18 weeks and she weighs around 8kg now so yours sounds about right.

Should I expect her weight gain to slow down? Shes my first staffy and puppy - looked after a pitbull for a while (for my brother) but well he was rescued and came to us around age 2 - so I have no idea what to expect!

she doesn't look overweight in your avatar.

as long as she isn't 'ribby' and she's happy & lively she's fine.

They all grow at different weights as pups so I would not be overly concerned if they look a little heavy only if they look undernourished.

She will be going out for walks soon so I think that probably helps slow the weight gain down a little. My little girl looks skinny but my vet has assured me she is bang on where she should be. I'm not convinced she is a full staffy though!

Yes she will soon run any puppy fat off when you get her out Smile As for full Staffy, did you see the parents ? what did the breeder tell you ? It`s a bit difficult to tell from the Avatar pic !

The breeder did say she is a full staffy but I'm really not sure. It doesn't bother me either way to be honest as she is beautiful!

That's true! It was just when I weighed her, I was like "wow she's heavy enough!" and thought I'd check if she was a somewhat normal size! Smile

I swear she'd eat me out of house and home! It makes me worry less knowing that your pup was of a similar weight at that age! Is she a big dog now - build wise?

Yep, they are beefy. Kiki is almost 7 months and today she weighed in at 13.6 kilos. 7 weeks ago she did not even weigh 10 kilos. She just started buffing up the last couples of weeks and I haven't even started training yet, just some light jogging for about 10 minutes a day.
I wonder where she'll end up at the age of 2

Some people say she's chunky, I just tell them to find some fat on her (no chance)
