My baby is a killer
Today I brought my two girls out to a lake were we like to go to cause its beautiful and is quiet really great spot to let them off lead for a go run around and a swim. All was going good till 8 month old penny came running out of the reeds with a half alive little water bird of some class. Poor thing was all chewed up but still breathing. Penny as proud as punch dropped it right at my feet. A lovely pressie for daddy LOL I had to finish the poor thing off which wasn't nice. Mimi has killed a few mice and a few frogs but not when she was that young. Think my baby is growing up. I know its just dogs being dogs but I never like it when they kill other animals.

I wonder if Penny really got it or if it was already flagging, birds are quite quick tbh even for Moo and her squirrel count is 9 now. There are never any marks, just a quick shake and there you go mum! Nature.

It looking like a very young chick. A friend said some water birds nest in the reed but I don't know. I would off thought birds would of being safe form them. I've seen mini chase a pair of swans in to the water and swim after them but as soon as the swans turn so did mimi tail between the legs flighting out of the water LOL

Yes a lot of birds nest in reeds, sadly to say maybe she did get one. Moo has a high prey drive so places where I think things shouldn't get caught I just don't walk her.
If it is nesting birds I personally wouldn't have her off lead. I would hate for nests to be disturbed. Xx

Mine would have a go at anything I'm afraid. Pig likes lizards best though.

Re: My baby is a killer
sadly it's just nature, we were in a pub garden that has a river at the bottom and some one on the other side was was walking a pair of spaniels, one of the dogs jumped in the river and killed a young duck, but left it in the river.the owner left after being confronted by a group of kids, but still didn't look bothered. where i live there are signs everywhere saying all dogs must be on a lead, even on footpaths on the river in the middle of no where

Ground hog, fox, squirrel and bird. That's a few things onyx has dropped at me. He got the hog and fox real bad. Had to wash all the gook off him
Well the fox was only 100 feet away from my girls in the woods, but it's their nature as said before. Any dog would have done that

Thankfully Suki hasn't caught anything yet. We keep on on lead most of the time.

Re: My baby is a killer
Kenny will chase any bird, to the point my hubby had to jump in the sea and rescue him after he chased a Seagull straight off the rocks!!
But, when the cat brought a live mouse in the house, Ken was shaking like a leave, run up stairs straight on my bed
I know it's really upsetting, but try not to look into it to much, she's young. Try and keep her on-lead when around the area where there could be nesting birds. Also, something to think about, Kenny will chase anything with wings, but we should be carefull, some birds are protected, and Swans are owned by the Crown, so im not sure how the law would stand if our dogs attacked/unsettled such birds

I hope Jelly never catches anything. I had a Siamese cat for years growing up and he killed and presented everything it could sink his fangs into. Blech!
Can totally understand being a bit disgusted by it, glad you didn't get to see it happen at least. Not pretty.

Re: My baby is a killer
I think Rocky would definately have a bird given half a chance along with squirrels too. We have to keep him on the lead when we are in our local woods which is attached to the park. There is one particular area where all the squirrels seem to congregate in the corner of the entrance to the wood, it's a nightmare trying to get past that area and some people put down food them too.

Re: My baby is a killer
Vin and Bella managed to tag team to get a rabbit a few weeks ago (more luck than judgement)
Luckily they seemed to have been playing with it rather than trying to savage it straight away. OH checked it over watched it for a while and let it hop away.
They do both love chasing rabbits though, luckily the rabbits are a LOT faster than them
