Feeding raw meat?
I met a woman the other day that said her staff wouldn't touch dog biscuits or canned dog food, so she fed him cooked chicken for every meal. He seemed to be in great condition.
I was wondering if anyone had experience with feeding staffs meat, raw or cooked?
Ide like to give chase some meat as an occasional treat, He has raw bones from the butchers on occasion, and he absolutely loves them. But they have barley any meat on them.
Does anyone feed meat as a treat? and if so, what kind, Chicken, Steak...?
Ive looked into it alot on the internet, but every other site seems to contradict the last...feels like im going around in circles...
Though ide see if anyone on here had any experience or knowledge when it comes to feeding meat?

Have a look in the health and nutirition section of the site where you will find lots of topics relating to this such as -
* https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t2170-looking-into-barf
and many more, most of them will have the topic name BARF or somethign similar (BARF is a raw meat and bones diet which many member here feed their dogs).

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Wait for Caryll to come online. she's our raw expert! I'm the same as you, every site I look at is different. I need a feeding raw for dumb cook book. Although I don't think you should be feeding cooked meat because of the bones, but I may be wrong.
As I said Caryll is our expert on this!

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Feeding cooked meat is fine as long as you don't give cooked bones, although cooking does get rid of some of the nutrients.
I feed Dempsey on raw ox heart, lamb or ox kidneys & raw meaty lamb bones (mainly spine, but also ribs & neck). He does really well on it.
It isn't for everyone, though. As said above, there are several topics under nutrition that deal with raw feeding & hopefully one or other will be of help. But if you need to ask any other question, please feel free!

Re: Feeding raw meat?
I hate how when you look at different sites they contradict each other.
So far, I've used common sense, common rules (Don't cook bones, make sure meat is fully thawed) advice from this forum, and occasional things from Google.
My OH took an Animal Care course at college, so he has some knowledge of it, the main thing is to an extent, it is trial and error, as many have said, their dog won't eat raw meat, I'm sure Caryll has said that Dempsy won't eat liver, whereas Molly gobbles it up as soon as it hits the bowl.
My best advice would be, take things slowly, work out what your dog likes and doesn't like and go from there. But as Caryll and others have said, there are plenty of threads on here, and they're all VERY friendly and helpful people on here, so don't be scared to ask questions!

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Yer it can be very hard when you look online, and everything just seems to contradict what you've previously read.
I wanted to give chase some meat, more as a treat and some additional nutrition, rather than a full time diet. But i read that feeding some meat mixed in to their dry food can irritate their digestion?
is there anyway to feed meat one a week for example as a treat/nutrition without upsetting their digestion?
I just wanted to get as much information as possible before i took any action.

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Once I week I can't see it being any harm.
We went to talk to a nurse recently and she said that giving chicken as a treat for re-call training is ideal, so in that sense, I can't see a piece of chicken once a week doing any harm.

Re: Feeding raw meat?
My 2 get raw meat, chicken, beef, lamb what ever i can afford to buy, like the other night we had mince beef- i was makeing meatballs & pasta for dinner, and i had 2 little helpers waiting for their butter fingers Mum to drop some lol i saved some for them, they love meat i only give them cooked meat if it's off the bone.
I think it's entirely up to you, to each his own, i know people who are vegetartians so they make their dogs vegetarians as well. It's their choice.

Re: Feeding raw meat?
We've had this argument on the forum before. You can't feed a dog a vegetarian diet without a fair few supplements.
Feed raw, dry complete or tinned etc, but not vegetarian. They can't digest veg anyway unless it's pulped or cooked.

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Because cooked bones become brittle & can splinter leaving very sharp edges.

I give sid either cooked chicken breast or raw meat from the pet shop, that meat comes frozen and only costs about 70p and you can get any meat there!! Rabbit, chicken, beef, tripe, lamb, fish all sorts!! Sid loves them all, well I've not given him tripe but that's because it's horrid in my opinion not his!!

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Yer i went and had a look in pets at home the other day and gazed into the freezers, i was surprised at just how much variety they had when it came to meats. They had what looked like blocks of meat, bags of meat and bone, and bags of minced meat. all came in different varieties, like steak, fish, tripe and lamb.
Anyone ever used any of these?
They say on the bags there suitable as a complete diet. Might get a bag soon and try chase on it, see if he likes it as an occasional treat.
I did read the bag and it didn't have any instruction as to the age your dog should be when eating this stuff (like the bags of dry food do) he's just under 7 months now, anyone know how old a dog should be before trying this stuff?

Re: Feeding raw meat?
got one of them frozen blocks yesterday, let it defrost and mixed a small amount in with his dry food, he absolutely loved it. It only cost like 80p for a block, and its packed with extra protein.
Might go to the butchers tomorrow and see what kinda stuff they have.

yer defiantly worth the money. i read the pack, its like 15% protein, some oils and the rest is just moisture. Good to get some extra protein in his diet tho, and he absolutely loves the stuff. Gunna head to the butchers tomorrow and see what they have to offer, they do good marrow bones their, its handy having a butchers 2 minutes round the corner!

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Can't remember what the blocks are called, but Pets At Home sell them in the freezer cabinets. You can get tripe, beef, chicken, fish & tripe with chicken (there may be more I don't know). They also do bags of frozen chunks of beef, heart, and tripe (although the tripe chunks are often hard to get). All of them are pretty cheap!

yer i was thinking the other day were gunna need a bigger freezer lol, the blocks are pretty small, but the bags are quite big, they only cost about £3. I just got one of the blocks to start off with to see how he took to it, and he goes crazy for it. I put more effort into his diet than i do my own lol

They are called prize choice and in different colours for different flavours, you can get them in smaller pet shops too if you'd rather spend money at small shops! I just got 6 packs for £4.48!! Bargain!!

Do you feed them as part of a daily diet then stevie?
I was planning to feed them as the occasional treat, but chase absolutely loves them, so it looks like its turning into a daily thing! um just fine tuning the amounts at the moment...
at the minute i give him quarter of a block in the morning mixed with his dry, a bowl of dry midday, and another bowl of dry with meat mixed in the evening.

When I was feeding Dempsey these, I just defrosted a whole block, broke it up a bit & gave it to him as it was. I buy ox heart now, because he's older & needs chunks rather than mince.

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Well I've just started with these again because they are cheaper than chicken breast from sainsburys which I was using(skint) but as sid is on just two bigger meals a day now I give him dry food in the mornimg as I can leave it out and then mix half a block with his biscuits at dinner time! Plus when I got sid he was 13weeks and the breeder (still in contact, good people!) told me that he was eating a third of this meat with Dry food three times a day,so I carried on with that! P.s I'm calling dinner time after work time not mid day.

Re: Feeding raw meat?
Chase goes mad for the stuff. Got him some ox liver from the butchers today, £1 for nearly 500g. Cut it all up into separate servings and stuck it in the freezer. its completely frozen through already, so um gunna get some out tomorrow morning and see how long it takes to defrost.
Seems like its gunna be a lot cheaper, and i assume more beneficial as far as nutrition goes to get him stuff from the butchers. Those blocks from pets at home are like 15% protein, 8% oil, and the rest is moisture.
