Mainly interested in teaching my step-kids better info about how to handle Jellybean. Of course, getting them to actually listen and follow our instructions is half the battle, but at least we can do our part by repeating the same correct information over and over Big Grin

Please and thanks!

thanks Caryll - generally helpful yes. I was thinking along the lines also of what we should tell them to do if they need to get her under control, i.e., with our 8 year old girl, she cowers a LOT if Jelly even goes to lick her (which is mostly all she does, the occasional puppy nip works its way in now and then though) so we tell her to be brave, if she comes at you, gently go towards her and take her collar firmly (not what we do, but step-D needs help getting her attention or she'll get ignored/bowled over), tell her to sit and then reward/praise. right now, Jelly sees her as a puppy, I think so at least. We've started her working on training Jelly as well when we are there to supervise, so maybe she'll see step-D as her "master" as well.

Doing the right things? Any tips along those lines?

Get her involved in training as much as possible and have her start to carry the lead in a closed in safe area while being supervised.

Does she jump up at her? If so, then getting her to say "No" and turning away like everybody else does will help her gain a measure of control over herself as well as Jelly.

Also, tell her to stand tall, don't bend over her or flap her arms around as Jelly will see that as play.

OK good thanks - we have been telling her all of those things, the collar thing is mostly for when Jelly just keeps jumping up on her when she turns around/away, and because that hasn't really been working so much at least not with step-D. she loves animals but doesn't like being touched or licked by them at all. yeah, not easy.

So maybe I should change my question or find a forum on training children to actually listen to and practice what they're told so as not to completely untrain the dog, and so they can generally get through life. Laughing

I'd like to say "been there, bought the t-shirt" ... but it's more "still there, still shopping for the t-shirt"! So far in order of ease of training it's been dog, child, husband - still working on the husband and I'll be bald pretty soon! at wits end

Have you tried asking her to help you train her and explaining why rules are important? It may make her feel more involved in the process as well as more likely to do what you want.

yes, have done jstaff - they have more or less loss interest since we got the dog and lo and behold, it really is a lot of work just like we said it would be. so even if she helps us train, it's the practice makes perfect element that is lacking. if the puppy does "it" (whatever "it" is, be it "sit", "paw", etc) once, then that (in step's head) is enough. she does try though, and i think we are going to make them both, step-D and step-S, walk her more using the harness, feed her, all of that. they are going to have to take an interest, period.

Have them feed her too. That will help Jelly to think of them as further up in the pack than her. If you would like them to walk her, I recommend a Gentle Leader. They are fantastic and honestly my four year olds can walk my Charlie when he has one on Smile
