farm dogs anld town dogs in an SA view
Hi
Robert and I were talking while cooking supper. Robert's faamily have been sheep farmers for generations. And we were talking about how farm dogs are perceived as being more aggresive than town dogs and we think its because most farm dogs have less interaction with strangers than town dogs. Anyone else's view on this?

I think that's a good point. Possibly also because farm dogs have a job to do and often aren't spoiled beyond belief, so they're not always as silly and wiggly as town dogs.

As said above Farm dogs are working dogs so definitely not intended to be cutesy and playful. Having said that my OH's Auntie has a farm and thier 3 Border Collie's are all very friendly dogs , so I think what ever is in their charachter / nature will be what they will show and not normally behaviour that they were trained for

Robert's family always had Border Collies and JRT's and while his father was alive he raised out hunting pack pups. Their dogs were working dogs and were very protective of them and not too trusting with strangers yet not vicious.
We live on a small farm and don't get very many visitors and I noticed that our dogs are a lot more protective towards me and the kids than my family in towns dogs are too them. Perhaps the fact that we live just next door to a squater camp and they sometimes tease the dogs.
This is why we want to socialize Tip.

I have noticed that when we get barked at on walks it's nearly always a border collie!!
But yes I think it's probably down to them not being in contact with many people and other dogs on farms, not well socialized so may appear aggressive? My mum has 3 collie types and they are nice natured dogs but they are not well socialized, I'm always telling my mum about it!

i live on a farm and i will admittedly say my dogs had less socilisatyion than most, but shes not agressive to humans and has been trained not to be to dogs she is also 100% about farm animals and will ignore chickens and cats etc if you are in view. i know MANY town dogs who are agressive to all things no matter how loud their owner shouts and how hard the try to pull them away.
