Dog Sick
What do you feed your dogs?
Lolas been throwing up, After eating... every day pretty much for the last week.. I dont know what you would class as a sicky dog but in the few months weve had her she has had the odd throw up session.
We cut out treats completely this week as she use to have a weekly bone & a few dental sticks to see if it was those, Shes always been fussy with her food... The home said they feed her wagg & we continued with that but recently shed go to 4 in the afternoon without eating then nibble at it & walk away.. Wanting to try something different i bought yesterday meaty meals by bakers, She had a bowl mixed with wagg last night & this morning but just ate the meaty meals ... She was sick this afternoon, Loads!!
she kept going back to her bowl so for dinner today... half hour ago I thought Id be clever, blended up the meaty meals as she seems to love it & really mixed it in with the wag.. she ate it all... But then shes just thrown it all back up.
despite just throwing up shes now pacing backwards & forwards to the kitchen wanting food???
what would you do?
Thank you!

Re: Dog Sick
OK, sorry - throw away the Bakers! It's absolute crap - full of additives. Try a better quality one, if cost is a problem try one of the cheaper ones like Winwrights. If she has a delicate tum I'd advise Fish4dogs.
But really, don't feed Bakers - it's probably the worst food on the market.

Re: Dog Sick
Bakers is evil. Throw it away. Wagg is not very good on its own dogs don't really like it. If shes being sick so much then something isnt agreeing with her, so i think a vet trip would be the first port of call, she could have a blockage or something. then new food!

Re: Dog Sick
Do you think she is 'ill', are her poo's ok? If so I personally wouldn't worry for now. Swap her feed to a better kibble and rather than leaving it down (I know its the only way to get her nibble) be harsh and take it away after 20mins all so.
I hope you get her eating soon and she feels better ><

Re: Dog Sick
Sadly Wagg isn't much better if at all than Bakers. There are much better foods out there if you want to stick with the dry kibble. See the list below for some suggestions. We have just switched Rocky onto Barking Heads TLC which seems to suit him :

Re: Dog Sick
Ok.. Im happy to throw the bakers away if thats the problem!!
I dont think she needs vets just better food.. Last 2 times shes was sick was after we gave her a ham hock bone.. My friend gives it to theirs & thought id try it, Lola loved them but she was sick the next day on both occassions, I think from where bones just hadnt been chewed up.
She eats wagg mixed with meat, just wet food makes her gassy lol & dogs gas stinks lol
Ill try find winwrights or fish4dogs, Is that what you feed yours?
Id rather her something she likes than something thats cheap!
Thank you for responding.. No more bakers for Lolas dinner, Ill keep the box as a little treat for tricks xx

Re: Dog Sick
I dont think shes Ill at all... Straight after being sick shes gone straight to her bowl wanting more.. Shes playing hide & seek with us & loving the sofa snuggles & yes her poos are fine...
I think i just have a balemic dog haha ... its probably not doing or going to do her tummy any good keep swapping & changing her food but hopefully we will find something to suit her...
Thank you for the list!!! Will read that now.. I just got her a tin of meat, She needs to eat something so Ill give her a 1/4 of that & a small handful of complete tonight & in the morning.. hopefully she keeps this down

Re: Dog Sick
Do you feed her just after a walk ?
If so it may be a better idea to leave it a for about an hour - 2 hours after exercise to feed her. Also maybe put her food in a Kong to slow the feeding down a bit if she is bolting it.

Re: Dog Sick
Try again.we had the same problem with ours I can't remember the food he was on when we got him but it was a good food but he was being sick.we then put him on jw beloved but he was still being sick.we tried him on another dry jollys recommended but still he was sick.he had various makes, hills, beta etc and he was still sick and losing weight.we put him on chappie at about 11 month with ped mixer and he's thrived on it,no more vomiting,he's packed the weight on and is in top condition.I know a lot will say it's no good but it really has worked for us so I would give it a try.it is bland and he turns his nose up at it but eventually he eats it.

Re: Dog Sick
wainwrights at pets at home for my 2. Its currently 2 boxes of 12 trays for £15 which is really quite reasonable, u get a good high meat content and no fillers or crap + hypoallergenic.
Other than that i Agree with the above, Bakers and Wagg = *.
staffys are known for sensitive tummys so best get him/her onto a good food x

Re: Dog Sick
Yup, Bakers and Wagg are two of the worst out there. If cost is a problem then try Skinners Field and Trial.
If money isn't a factor go for something like Fish4Dogs, Applaws or Orijen.
If she inhales her food then slowing her down will help. Putting it in a Kong as mentioned above is a good idea, also makes feeding time more of a challenge and fun.
You say you gave her a ham bone; it wasn't cooked was it?

If you have a Pets at Home local go in and speak to them about the issue, some of them can give you a 2kg bag of some of the better quality foods as a trial

Re: Dog Sick
I feed mine wet Nature Diet as she doesn't like kibble and it doesn't create excessive gas - and a couple of tins of pilchards a week. She also likes frozen peanut butter in her kong and the only other thing she chews on is a stag bar.

Rocky was sick when we used to give him Pedigree Dental Sticks do you give Lola those, these could be making her sick too. They are full of rubbish ingredients and generally not very healthy. You may want to find an alternative

Re: Dog Sick
Hey all...
Kong sounds like a good idea!! She has one that we put peanut butter in. SHE LOVES IT! there was once in the car that she was quiet.. Hubby had taken peanut butter to work & forget he left it on the back seat, Lola managed to open it & was quietly licking away at it .. Love her..
the ham bone was bought in & I didnt read it :/ Does that make me bad lol
The dental sticks are not pedigree, They are from the local green grocers once every 2 weeks I go & grab her a couple of pigs ears, chicken feet, deta sticks & rawhide bones.. comes to about £2.60 which I think is good.
I know some people dont treat their dogs but Lolas not over weight, She gets exercise & she loves them!!
Food wise... I really dont know what to try.. She does really love the bakers but if its bad for her & she continues to be sick its obviously not a good choice. Ill work my way through the suggested foods if the problem continues.
after throwing up 2 dinners today her 3rd was a small handful of wagg & 1/4 tin of meat which so far has stayed down.. Of to bed now so hopefully no late night retching from lola
Thank you all again & good night x

Don't forget to change food gradually. It's not good to change it at a sudden.

Please don't give her ham bones (I know there are members here who will disagree), in fcat don't give any sort of cooked bones at all. They can splinter & cause internal problems - plus bum gravy!
I feed raw, but a lot of people here swear by Fish4dogs.
Dogs don't need to chew their food, their stomach acid is strong enough to break it down. If she's eating too quickly, then that's a different matter. You can get food bowls designed to slow the eating down if you think it's a problem.

Re: Dog Sick
As Caryll has said, cooked bones are bad, they can splinter and/or cause an obstruction.
If you want to feed bones then give them raw and steer clear of the big weight bearing bones of large herbivores like cow knuckle bones.
ETA: Fish4Dogs is a good food and generally well tolerated by dogs with sensitive tums. Wainwrights wet trays are good too (better than their dry food).

Re: Dog Sick
Im going to agree with you on the bones.. shes had one twice now & both times sick, Like a watery sick so I think something maybe didnt go all the way down.
I thought it was just chicken bones that you couldnt give dogs! Raw hide it is from now on & shes fine with those, Hides it for an hour then fetches it keeps her occupied )

See if you can get hold of a few samples bags of food to try and see what Lola gets on best with. I can recommend Barking Heads TLC Rocky has this and loves it.

I don't feed the processed rawhide bones either, not after discovering how they're made and how they can swell in the stomach and cause all sorts of issues.
Have you tried a Stagbar? They're great, last ages and are safe. Also bully sticks/pizzle sticks/bulls pizzle are good for a treat.

Can also recommend the stag bars Rocky loves them, they are available from Jolleys if you one locally. If not try Amazon or Pure Dog, remember to check the postage charge though.:

Or just to throw it in as another option....you could try her on a raw diet as she loves bones
You can give them raw chicken bones, they are easily digested. Just not cooked.
