Re: house training for a five month old
Personally I wouldn't bother with paper training, it only means you have too train them twice to go outside.
Just go back to basic 'puppy' training. Take her out every half hour and massive praise when she does go outside.
Did you house train your Dalmation too?? She'll get there, but its a whole new enviroment for her too.

Re: house training for a five month old
I'm not a fan of paper training, and anyway, yes she's too old, she'll just get confused.
You'll have to go right back to basics, I'm afraid. Take her into the garden every half hour or so (I know she's getting walks, but this is different) and if she does anything, even a tiny wee, give her lots of praise!
If she goes indoors, don't make a fuss, just take her into another room & go back & quietly clear up. Use a cleaner that doesn't contain amonia as it smells just like wee to a dog & will encourage her to use that spot again! Try some biological washing powder (in solution) or liquid.
She'll soon realise what's wanted from her, but you'll need to be patient.
P.S. don't worry about asking questions - ask as many as you like, as often as you like!!

Hi John.
Don't worry about asking advice, that's what we're here for!
I wouldn't advise pad training. Some people have success with it but it can be confusing for the dog because when they're pad trained, we then want them to lean to go outside!
My pup is 3 months old, and housetraining was a nightmare at first but he's slowly getting the hang of it. Take Lola outside after eating, drinking, sleeping and playing, and every hour or so in between. Close the back door and stay out there with her for at least ten minutes. If and when she does it, go WILD with praise.
When she does it indoors, just clean it up, deodorise it and leave it at then. Keep an eye out for sniffing on the floor purposefully with her tail in the air. That means she needs to be taken outside pronto.
Good luck

Re: house training for a five month old
hi thanks for the quik replys .....yes we did train esme (dalmation) with paper kept moving it towards the door till she got the message lol and our last staffie was a rescue from north west staffie rescue who jade had from 5 yr old till she was 19 and a half .she fought till the end bless her. think il do what you suggested and take her out every half hour .do you think it best if i leave esme in while i put her out as she seems more interested in hanging of esmes face than using the loo lol yes shes very good at doing the poo walk. luckily we have wooden flooring throughout so its no problem to clean it.

Re: house training for a five month old
It might be better to start with if you leave Esme inside. No distractions!

Re: house training for a five month old
Yep, definitely leave Esme inside, but when Lola starts to get the hang of it, let her see Esme doing it too so that she knows she doing the right thing, which of course, she'll already know by your exuberant praise

Re: house training for a five month old
They're gorgeous.
And don't fret over the toilet training, it took Molly up to about 6 months to work it out.
They pick it up eventually.

Wow, it's amazing what you learn by reading these forums. I use bleach and hot water and it doesn't always remove the smell, so I may use washing powder instead, thanks for the tip. x

Re: house training for a five month old
Any advice.......Logan is brilliant at his toilet time. He'll stand and look at the door when he needs to go out for a wee or a poo. At night time he'll have a poop in the garden about 8 ish and then we let him out again to have a wee before bed time. The trouble is, when we get up in the morning he's been pooping again. We get up at 0630-0645 every morning to let him out and do his stuff but we can't get the night time pooping under control. Any ideas? Should i change his feed time? (he gets fed twice. bout 7 ish and 6pm on dry food) i've tried to narrow down the time he does it by checking but its different times! sometimes he'll do nothing until the morning toilet break. Will he grow out of it or am i asking too much at the minute. (he's 6 months old and i've had him 5/6 weeks! so i think he is still settling in) good job i bought a VAX in the Xmas sales!!

Re: house training for a five month old
I think it's still a settling-in period for him. He's still very young & some can't control their bowels/bladder properly till they're about 8 or 9 months, so I'd try to patient if I were you (not easy!).

Re: house training for a five month old
Thanks again for your advice peeps! Much appreciated! I'm hoping he'll settle down with it. I keep forgetting he's only been at home with us for 5 weeks! It feels sooooooo much longer than that. (in a good way!)
