Severe dandruff after bath
Hi all
I've posted previously that Zeus had a dandruff problem, and that by giving him apple cider vinegar daily in his food, it got rid of the problem.
I gave him his first bath yesterday using a Pets At Home anti-bacterial shampoo and dried him with a towel infront of the fire place as he absolutely hated the hair dryer.
He was fine yesterday, didnt notice any dandruff but woke him up this morning and he's got dandruff falling off him.. literally. I've brushed his hair and its still coming off him, much more than before.
I'm guessing its to do with his bath.. has anyone else had similar problems? any solutions?

Re: Severe dandruff after bath
The only thing I could suggest is give him another good rinse with just water then leave to dry naturally. It could be that natural oils in his coat have been stripped by the bath ??? Just a guess really

I very rarely bath Moo only when she has been in the cannal cause she hums, they don't need it tbh and as Kathy mentioned I would have thought it may have dried his skin, whilst it is getting better using the cider vinigar I would refrain from bathing him for now

Re: Severe dandruff after bath
I think the shampoo may have been too harsh for his sensitive skin. A little olive oil in his diet would seem the right thing to do IMHO.

An occasional bath shouldn't cause dry skin like that; nor should a shampoo specifically formulated for dogs...What do you feed him?

i thought the exact same thing. im pretty sure this is his first bath ever, so wouldnt have thought he'd have that much dandruff. it has calmed down a bit since i posted but still see some. hes on wainwrights dry food at the moment, but ive noticed that he scratches alot since hes been on it so i'm going to try orijen dog food and see how he fares with that.
i give him fish4dogs fish oil in his morning feed, which supposedly helps promote healthy skin and i also give him apple cider vinegar in one of his other feeds, id have thought his skin would be perfect after all of that in his diet but like yourself, i think it may be his food.

Hmm, you'd think with the fish oil he wouldn't have dry skin...
If he's been itchy it maybe 'walking dandruff' which is actually caused by a mite, mind you, I would've thought it'd be present before the bath...What flea treatment do you use?
Will be interesting to see if it changes once he's on the Orijen.

Could be wrong type of shampoo IMO I can't use any of the commercial dog shampoos on my two with their sensitive skin.
Etiderm is by far best. Xx

I've just used frontline combo on him today.. lets hope it sorts any problems out. im slowly moving him onto Applaws dry food instead of Orijen as there is a distributor near my house, so will keep you all informed on how he goes! Thanks for everyones input!
