Hi, am new and needs some info please
Hi All, i'm looking for some info. We have a 4 year old staffy who is spoilt rotten and thought about getting a pup to give her a bit of company. We found a pup that we liked which is now six weeks old, the problem we have is the owners of the pup want us to pick him up early (we planned at least another two weeks) but it turns out the mother has pushed the pups away and doesnt want anything to do with them now.
At this age he hasn't had his jabs yet so we are unable to take them out to introduce them to one another due to him not having his injections, is there another way of doing this. I know its not ideal getting a pup that early but we have been left with little choice, any other info on this sort of situation would be greatly appriciated
p.s I have read the other pages on introducing but there was nothing for my situation

Personally I would look for anthor dog that I could get at 8 weeks or later. They miss out on alot of socialization skills and life lessons if taken too early.

Hiya and welcome from me and Moo
Really the pup should be left with its litter mates (as you know) for another 2 weeks, even if the mum is rejecting them they learn so much of there early behavior from the litter and the breeder should know this also.
I've never had 2 before so I'm not really sure what to advise but I'm sure they'll get on fine and congrats on your new addition

Hi jstaff and Janey, this is the problem we have, we have half paid for the pup and our daughter is totally in love with it, they say that our pup is the last to go and there are no more pups for him to bond with. We are over a barrel so to speak, like I say any info is greatly appreciated.

It is not the ideal situation but could still work. Given that they are of opposite sex they should get along fairly well. Is your girl spayed? Is she well socialized?
They should be left for 8 weeks minimum but your female may very well adopt a motherly role which will negate the issue

Yes the girl is spayed but not as well socialized as I would like but she has a really good temprement and not agressive and does like a cuddle.jstaff wrote:It is not the ideal situation but could still work. Re: Hi, am new and needs some info please
Hi & welcome.
Well, it looks as though you're stuck with the problem! Normally, even if the mother has rejected the pups (very, very rare) they should still be with their siblungs until at least 8 weeks. By the sound of it the breeder has sidestepped his/her responsibility in this respect.
If you really can't look for another pup, then the only thing you can do is take it and hope for the best. Introduce them carefully & make sure your 4 year old girl is given loads of fuss (it's so easy to ignore the older dog when a pup comes into the house). Then it's just a matter of supercising them to make sure that nothing gets too rough.
Remember that as well as the pup needing regular spells of quiet, you should also make sure that your older girl gets a chance to relax quietly from time to time or she may start to resent the pup.
Good luck!

I would keep a close eye on body language because your girl may not take well to a new pup in the house. Here is a link that will help
http://staffy-bull-terrier.co.uk/dogbodylanguage.html
If you are going to be away from home it is best to keep them seperated to be on the safe side. Also don't fuss over the new dog too much at first because it could make your girl jealous

Re: Hi, am new and needs some info please
Hi welcome! Sorry you are in this predicament. I hope it all turns out okay and the puppy is nice and healthy. We had to rehome a pup at 6 weeks once because it was the biggest in the litter and the other pups didn't have a chance to suckle at all because of this bully and he kept breaking out of the whelping box and running away, if i didn't know when he was born i would have said he was a lot older but he went to his new home with strict instructions and he turned into a lovely dog.

Re: Hi, am new and needs some info please
hi and welcome!
I got my Winston at 6 weeks of age, ( so it can be done, though it is not ideal I know ) and he had had his first lot of vaccinations...but here in Australia they have needles again at 10 weeks and then 16 weeks then every year after that ( except some now last for 3 years depending what vet you go to ! )
When you get Douglas are you taking him to the vets for a check up and everything? Could he have his needles then? Like everyone said I would supervise the 2 dogs when they are together, and not leave them together when you aren't home.... just in case. And with Douglas..socialise, socialise .
Good luck!
