Walking....
Heeey
How much exercise should my little man need? The puppy trainer we have been to has said one 20 min walk a day as he is only 13 weeks but this is like a warm up for him as he comes home and runs like a nutter for half an hour.
What do yous think? x

Re: Walking....
5 minutes per month of age is a good guideline. However, you should go at least twice per day and three times is even better. Alot of the behaviour problems will be reduced with proper exercise.

Re: Walking....
As long as you keep it short, 2 or 3 walks a day is ideal. They are full of energy and it sometimes seems as if no amount of walking is enough, its part of their charm
But the vet is right about 1 thing, keep the walks to about 15 minutes each because if you overdo it at this age, you risk permanent damage to his joints.

Re: Walking....
I take Buster for a minimum of 2 half hour walks a day. He is 7 months. Does that mean Im overdoing it? I was thinking ab out increasing his walks as he is really full of energy. We went for a walk the other night, on the way back home we met a staffy x boxer that he ran around and played with for about 20 mins and then when we got home he raced around playing fetch and throwing his toys about. If I walked him less I think he would become very destructive

Re: Walking....
The rough rule is 5 minutes per month of life per walk. So, for a 4 month old pup 3 walks of 20 minutes would be the ideal. However, if during that walk you are in a park, you could let him off lead to run around (without ball chasing etc) for another 10-15 minutes as long as he is allowed to rest when he needs to & doesn't get over tired. Always let him have a little rest before you walk him home again.
Hyperactivity can also be due to the food he's getting, though. What do you feed him?

Re: Walking....
We are feeding him Chumleys dry food as thats what came from the breeder. Should we change?
Today we done a 20min walk and a 40min walk (which generally takes 20mins but my 1yo daughter was walking the whole way so it was snail paced lol) and he had a run about the garden with my dads springer so he is chilling out on my lap now welland truly tired out x

Re: Walking....
40 minutes is definitely far too long! Especially if it was mainly on lead, you could end up damaging his tendons & growth plates.
At his age, 3 walks of 20 minutes (plus a little off lead play) is the most he should be getting.
