Raw diet (again)
First off apologies to all the raw feeders on here who must be totally fed up with all the questions, but any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
I want to start feeding Murphy a raw diet, he is nine months old and weighs 18k. The problem is he will eat anything, usually without chewing it!
I have experimented by giving him one large chicken wing to see how he would go, basically it was CRUNCH CRUNCH swallow, it took a bit of getting down but he managed it.
Next I gave him a lamb breast, he bit it in half and then tried to swallow one piece (about the size of your hand) whole. He couldn't get it down and started to panic and choke, luckily I was standing beside him and managed to grab it from the back of his throat. It really gave me a scare!!
My question is, are there ways of feeding him to cut the risk of him choking, ie grind or chop the pieces, or are some dogs just not cut out for a raw diet?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Raw diet (again)
I raw fed Diesel from 8 weeks and she would down a chicken wing after a cpl of crunches, totally freaked me out !
From then on I cut them up into what I call manageable sizes. U could try that ?
Unfortunately I don't raw feed anymore so can't offer any other advice.

Thanks for that Jackie, I think I'll do the same and cut the meat up in to pieces, it gave me quite a fright when he started to choke.
Would it be rude of me to ask why you stopped feeding raw?

Re: Raw diet (again)
we feed billy raw, he is fussy and will not eat big chunks of meat so I cut them up for him, i have found out with bones he will only eat lamb bones now, which maybe require a bit more chomping but they seem to last him a while about 20 mins

My two generally crunch a wing once or twice and swallow them, and TBH have never had any problems and i'm not bothered you could try feeding the food still frozen or try holding it to encourage them to crunch it

Np, only stopped raw feeding due to lack of freezer and fridge space ! Sounds lame I know but we are a big family with 4 kids, couldn't have Diesels food taking up most if the fridge/freezer and we werent in a position to have a second freezer.
So, she's now on Wainwrights complete which is hypoallergenic etc. She will still have the occasional beef bone as a treat tho.
My Diesels breeder weaned the whole litter on raw

Re: Raw diet (again)
Sorry my ignorance... when you say RAW, do you mean RAW????
No cooking involved? I am interested since I would not like to give my puppy (soon to be home) rubbish tin food or Processed ones...
What does Raw food actually work?
Any reference for me to check and understand the concept?
Thanks

Hi Marco
Please see link for raw food, which Ella did. It is feeding your dog raw meat and bones, it does not suite evry dog or every owner. Billy is fed raw.

Re: Raw diet (again)
Thanks for all the useful info.
I have another question and my apologies if it's been asked a hundred times before!
When feeding organs, liver, kidney etc. Do you feed a little bit with every meal or a larger portion once or twice a week?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Raw diet (again)
I feed a small amount a couple of times a week. They really don't need too much of it, certainly not a whole meal. It's very rich.

Re: Raw diet (again)
Hello all, another question for the raw feeders if I may.
I've recently found a good source of ox spleen, should I use it sparingly like liver, kidneys etc. or should I just feed it like regular meat?
Many thanks in advance.

Re: Raw diet (again)
Another question for the raw feeders if I may.
I recently bought 10kgs of turkey necks, but I'm not quite sure how to feed them as they are so much bigger than chicken necks. Should I give them as a meal on their own, or with some chunks of meat, or with some organs, or as a treat?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks ella, I was thinking that might be the best option.
