Raw feeding( again)
OK, so I know its been covered many times but I am just trying to do my best for my SBT x AB cross. I tried him on chicken thigh quarter for the first time tonight and he tore it up gave him 1 and a half pieces (roughly 375 grams). So I want to continue to feed this way and want to make sure he is getting enough food, I read your puppy menu and can accommodate most of the items and sure he will eat most of them but I would prefer to keep to chicken, but as he is a cross not sure which adult body weight to go for. He is already 10 kilos at 12 weeks so about half the weight of a adult SBT so he is obviously going to be larger so I am wondering what adult weight to use to calculate his intake and should I spread it across 2 or 3 meals.

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
I would imagine that, being an AB x Staff he'll be pretty big, so around 30 kilos-ish?
For the first few days just keep an eye on his overall condition. If you're not feeding him enough then he'll start to look a little thin, in which case increase the amounts a bit. At his age, I'd still feed 3 times a day until about 6 - 9 months.

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
Thanks for the quick reply, will he be OK just having chicken thighs and wings for now with the occasion sardines or mackerel (2-3 times a week) with eggs (although not tried raw eggs yet) or will he need variety such as chicken livers and cottage cheese etc. He is starting on a diet where he eats better than me
And I remember when we had our bull-mastiff and i would cycle from work furiously to prepare tripe, scrambled eggs whole wheat toast whilst nibbling on a limp ham and cheese sarnie

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
No if you are doing the full raw diet with no dry food, you cannot just feed chicken, they need a good variety of foods, alot of red meat, offal especially liver.
Don't need the cottage cheese or anything like that have a look at this site for starting out: www.preymodelraw.com

He will need a variety of meats and offal. Have a look through this post started by Ella...It's basically for an adult dog, but it'll give you an idea of what meat groups you should be looking to feed & in what proportions.......

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
I've been through this worry too.
Saffy is on raw. I worked it out by her current body weight. She was 4.5kg when I started her and as advised by the lovely Caryll I did 7% of her bodyweight. So 4.5 - 7% = 315grams per day. I split this over 3 meals. Now she's on about 400g per day split over 3.
Now the ratio is 80% meat, 10% offal, 10% bone on a weekly basis.
My personal preference is 80% meat, 15% bone, 5% offal on a daily basis. Because Saffy is very fussy sometimes and will eat just bones and offal if you let her.
So her macros are: 320g of meat (beef or chicken) 60g chicken bone, 20g of offal.
Diesels at 12kg: 672g meat chunks, 126g bone and 42g offal.
Basically in my opinion they need a bit more calcium from bones to help with stable solid growth- it's just my opinion though. So I prefer to feed a bit more bones.
Also meat should be the main ingredient of their meals. I personally wouldn't feed bone with every single meal to start off either. Just because too much bone can make them constipated. Chicken quarters and thighs are good really fatty cheap ones are the best I reckon. They need fat for energy so don't buy lean cuts. Chicken necks are Saffys favourite at the mo.
As Caryll said if he looks a little thin feed more but a good tip is to feed beef if you think he needs fattening up. I don't know why but Saffy looks fatter after a few days of beef in her meals.
I don't really weigh anything anymore. I just go by sight and sense but to start off it gave me an idea about portion sizes and what Saffy will actually eat. Don't be surprised if after a week or so his apptite wains a bit. I don't know why but from what I read from other experience dogs learn more self control. My opinion is that because they actually have to chew their food they receive 'full signals' way before a kibble fed dog.
I have really looked into feeding a puppy raw. But I am no expert and I have still got alot to learn especially when Saffy becomes an adult. But I know what I am doing works for my pup so just thought I'd share my thoughts on it!
Good luck
Ps. Check out Ella's threads on what she feeds her dogs too! She is very inspirational!

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
Hi all been doing the raw for about a week now, things going great.
We are beginning to expand the diet to include other meats other than chicken so we bought a months supply from raw2paw but are worried about buying so much food. Do we feed the mince we bought ( lamb, chicken and liver and beef) frozen as well as the meat chunks and offal and meaty bones etc. or defrost and feed. They seem to enjoy the chicken necks frozen but we have been defrosting the chicken quarters in case they get a chill in the stomach

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
I usually defrost first, but the occasional frozen or part frozen bit doesn't hurt. If I'm in a hurry then I do put down half-defrosted things!

Awww sounds like they are very happy!
Also not only is it good for them, I've noticed that Saffy has a much better 'body shape' than her litter mates who are on kibble. She's not lean because she's a puppy, obviously, but her body seems more chunky and compact. Not leggy. If you know what I mean! Will be good to compare them as they are growing.

Thanks! Yeah I try my best for her. She's my baby!
Honestly after a week or so it's become quite natural tbh. And because she's quite fussy, I can switch up her meals more easily than I could on kibble IMO. It seems to suit her and of course I'm still learning. But I wouldn't have even considered it if I hadn't joined the forum and Caryll mentioned it. Plus Ella's posts are always very useful! So kudos to them

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
AHHHHH, got a reasonably large order from raw2paw good service and good product but the bloody dogs don't seem to enjoy any of the minces compared to the chicken leg quarters and other meaty bone such as lamb ribs, beef ribs chicken carcass or chicken necks. Hopefully the will get used to it as I've got about about 20 -30lbs of it
Will they actually get used to it or are they just set on chicken quarters because of the transition phase of the diet

Blue isn't keen on minced meats either. He prefares the chunks. It's good in one way as chunks are better for their teeth but there are less choice in the chunks

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
Not sure about feeding chunks to puppies as I have only ever fed RAW to an adult dog. But I can cut the chunks up into smaller chunks with a knife.

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
Chunks are fine for a pup to eat i never cut them smaller as thats causes choking hazards as pups just try to swallow them

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
Chunks I get are normally about 250g-300g of meat.
To give people an idea what size chunks would be the smallest in grams that would be suitable for puppys?
Thanks for all your input on Raw feeding Ella, I have learn't so much from them

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
Erm obviously it wouldn't be exact to the nth degree but i wouldn't want chunks smaller then say 100-150g a bit. So your 250-300g bits would be a good size for them to have a chew on
Awww thanks!

Yes that's true. Do you know of anywhere that does good quality chunks? Because the butcher near me has little choice for what would be pet grade( ie not steak prices). Although I did get a few pieces of lower leg sliced into 1" thick slices with the marrow exposed and he loved it ( of course took the bone from him when the meat all gone so not chewing tough leg bones) but looking at about 20 quid for the whole piece. And given that Kasper is AB cross staffy and he is at 16 weeks and already 12kg and solid, seems expensive to get decent chunks,

Re: Raw Food Menu for a Puppy
I get mine delievered. It is ordered from an online company.
http://www.landywoods.co.uk/price_list.html
They have removed their prices at the moment but they are by far the cheapest and it is packages well. You have to spend over £30. I just ordered £35 worth and that will last me about 5-6 weeks.
Ella suggested a good site
http://www.landywoods.co.uk/price_list.html
I enquired. You have to spend min £50. They are more expensive but they have allot more choice than landywoods. They emailed me a price list. Which I would email/show you if I could.
If you phone either they should be able to give you more information

Well i have a staff and american bull who is up to 50kg now, and i buy direct from Durham animal feeds, get bits from butchers and chinese supermarkets.
I get my 'meat chunks' from the butchers and although i don't like feeding minces i get them DAF as they are easier to hide supplements in and thats the only reason i feed them.
Pets at home also sell 'chunks' if there is one near you
