Won't walk on the lead.. advice plesae :)
Hi all, hope you can help, Skye will not walk on the lead, she's fine off the lead and walks close to our feet when out, but as soon as the lead goes on she just stands dead still and will not budge, I don't wont to drag her as this will not help i'm sure. as soon as i release the lead she's fine, what's the easiest way to stop this behavior, my other dogs have been fine on the lead. ( oh and she sulks when her collar or harness is on, I'm leaving it on for longer periods to get her more used to it)
looking forward to the usual great advice

Have you tried putting the collar and lead on when she is at home and just let her drag the lead around. This may help to get her used to it???
What kind of collar does she wear??

She wears the harness you see in the pic above, I've not let her drag the lead around yet as it's a retractable one. Maybe I'll try it with the other lead but won't that encourage lead chewing?
Re: Won't walk on the lead.. advice plesae :)
It should be Ok just keep an eye on her. Just let her drag the other lead not the retractable one.
PS She should wear a collar with her ID on when out and about.

Re: Won't walk on the lead.. advice plesae :)
yep i have the collar with tag on, but her fur is still quite thin under her chin / neck so don't really want it rubbed until it gets a bit stronger and thicker, i'll put that lead on now... lets see what happens
Re: Won't walk on the lead.. advice plesae :)
No worries. We only put Rocky's collar on when out for walks. They do tent to rub a little. We do have a member who makes her own collars, please see link below about half way down. I think she does a lovely job of these.

OK, tried leaving the lead on she just lays down and chews it.
Re: Won't walk on the lead.. advice plesae :)
caesar does this also i tried leaving it on in the house but he chews it.strange how he walks perfect off the lead right next to me but its difficult to get him to move on lead.its not so bad with him off lead because hes young and not vey quick so is under control all the time.when hes allowed back out i thinkill try a harness

Treats, put a treat in front of her while someone is holding the lead, or when your in the house with the lead on, she doesnt get the treat till she walks towards it herself. that is what we had to do with daisy when seh was little

Always such a cute one!!
I would try a soft collar and get her used to that first, personally at that age I wouldn't use a harness.
Get a normal hand lead and practice in the house, and let her puppy around with the collar. She'll get used to it.
If she chews it discourage it. I walk with a friend who has a collie x and he is nearly 2, tries to play tugs with his lead and it can be a pain!

Get her used to it in the house. Leave it on and when she starts to go somewhere pick up the lead. You can also use food or a favorite toy for encouragement

if you try make it fun while your out hold the lead and kneel on the floor in front of her and do your silly voice to call her and see what happens. lemmy used to hate his and i must admit felt a fool in the street on my hands and knees playing around but he soon got used to it and enjoyed walks
