Staffy Wont Walk On Lead
Hi
Firstly I wish everyone a happy new year!!!!
Secondly I have two staffs male and female, the male is 7 months old and walks on the lead and off the lead no problem, I had him from 15 weeks old and he was out walking at 16 weeks once he had his injections.
My female staff Marge is 15 weeks old and I have had her from 8 weeks old, I tried put her on a lead at 10 weeks as per the vets advice, she didnt want to walk once the lead is on her she just sits or lies on the ground, trying to intice her to move was hard even with treats she would only walk no more than a minute then refuse to walk
SO I waited for a bit and within the last few weeks she is now 15 weeks and have been trying her on the lead and she just will not walk, even giving her a tug she just refuses even if I take them both out she can see Barney walking and running about and she wont do it.
She is fine in the house and in the garden off the lead, even on the lead in the house she wont walk, what can I do....??????

No very strange I cant understand why she wont she follows him everywhere in the house, also if I put the lead on Barney in the house her head goes down and she does not want to know yet she can see him going mad becuase he loves to walk on the lead.

Have you tried taking her out individually? The treats are a good method to get her going. She is likely just nervous being out. The more frequently she gets out and the more places she goes the more comfortable she will get.

Yes initially was taking her out on her own and she was doing the same thing, then I thought I would take them both out as she will see the other dog and think its ok.
Yes she seems nervous but despite stroking her and assuring her and feeding treats she wont budge.

Do you leave straight from the house as driving them somwhere new can often help and be a distraction xx

Re: Staffy Wont Walk On Lead
They are all a little different. We got Suki when she was about 16 weeks and she was scared to go for a walk. The sounds of cars and trains made her very nervous and she would pull like mad in an effort to get home. We took her to an area away from home where it was quiet and she was alot better.
At home we didn't force things and just let her discover things at her own pace.

Re: Staffy Wont Walk On Lead
No not driving them anywhere, we have a big walk and green in front of our house and I have tried her out there she wont even walk in the house on the lead I tried for 30 minutes this evening about 10 minutes inside and then took her outside and she would not walk, she even refused the treats in the finish as she was full up LOL as I kept trying her.
I dont know why she is so nervous but she is the same in the vets as well just sits there on the lead I had to pick her up and carry her in there the last time I went.

Re: Staffy Wont Walk On Lead
Yes its quiet where we live, no other dogs around and nobody out and no roads either, so definately not noise. I work during the day but have tried walking her of a morning with the same thing.

Re: Staffy Wont Walk On Lead
Have you tried attaching the lead while she is at home and just her drag it around wherever she goes. Just buy a light weight lead for this purpose and see how it goes.
