Summer Heat
Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and all, but I joined for a specific reason. Let me give a little bit of info to help with the question about summer heat.
I currently live in the north east where it's nice and cold. Heat hasn't really been an issue for our puppy (who is about 8 months old now) since she's an indoor dog. But we might be moving in the near future to California. The problem with this is that we'll have to move in with a relative of mine before we can secure our own place and he has two cats so he's absolutely against letting the dog come inside the house, even if she's caged and kept away from said cats. *sigh* I lived most of my life in Cali and I know the summers there can get pretty brutal (sometimes hitting 110) so I was curious if there's a way to keep my staffy outside safely? I really don't want to put her in any sort of danger and if it isn't possible then I'll have to try to find another solution (possibly find a new home for her ;_. But at the moment we planned on building/buying her a dog house and installing fans in it, as well as making sure she has a well shaded area. But still I worry this won't be nearly enough for her. Also figured we'd try to keep a small kiddy pool always full of clean water so she can jump in and cool off if she ever needs to.
What do you guys think? Do you have any suggestions to make it possible to keep her outside 100% of the time in grueling southern California heat? Or do you guys think it'd be too dangerous to attempt this?

Re: Summer Heat
I don't think you were being harsh at all Pado.
Although I giggled that your bully shivers so easily. I take Mei out when it's about 10F out and she loves bouncing around in the snow banks. But I normally don't keep her outside more than 20 minutes on walks. I wouldn't keep her outside that low for extended periods of time. Perhaps it's just because she's all active that she doesn't get the shivers.
I understand it's hard to say without knowing the exact specifics and all. I just wasn't sure what specifics to give as this isn't something I'm used to thinking about (she's my first dog). And unfortunately it seems like this situation isn't really going to work out very well. The house's backyard is on the west so it gets the brunt of the afternoon sun. :/
I guess at this point our best option might be to fly down a month or two in advanced and try to purchase a place before we make the move. It's just another added expense I'm not thrilled at. But I appreciate your input, it was helpful!

Re: Summer Heat
I also am in the CA valley and it's too hot even though I have nearly fourty trees and mostly solid shade. It isn't worth the risk. My dogs always have been indoor dogs and Bully breeds are far to sensitive to heat to keep outside in summer. Hopefully you can work out something that won't break the bank. I feel for ya though. Beautiful pup and welcome!

Re: Summer Heat
Staffies are prone to overheating rather quickly. PersonallyI would not leave Tyson outside for too long. He does have a shady dog house and a little kiddie pool to cool off in.

Re: Summer Heat
Mei is so cute i agree that any bully breed is prone to overheating. sounds to me like this will require careful planning. i'm posting a link that may, repeat-may help a little. this isn't a solution in itself, but is one temporary option. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_7?url=search-alias%3Dpets&field-keywords=cooling+dog+bed&sprefix=cooling%2Cpets%2C303#/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dpets&field-keywords=cooling+dog+bed&rh=n%3A2619533011%2Ck%3Acooling+dog+bed good luck! p.s. have i mentioned how cute lil' Mei is?

Re: Summer Heat
I wanted to thank everyone for their advice, input, and opinions. Honestly I really do think it's not possible to have her at my family's house in Cali, so there definitely needs to be a different solution in place before we move.
Thanks for the cooling bed link! I hadn't thought about that, should probably invest in one for Cali just because though. And I think you did mention how cute she is! She was super adorable as a lil puppy, she's.. less cute now that she's so big! But more because I can barely pick her up now! So I'm sad she can't be a lap puppy anymore. Last time I weighed her she was already over 50 pounds and that was well over a month ago. I wonder how much she weighs now. I should get more updated pictures of her but our camera likes to glitch out and give very grainy images. It's very frustrating.
Well, I'm worried about the move which would also include the heat more than anything. When I first started thinking about the move I was worried about winter as well, as it drops down to near 0c at night there (since Cali is a desert). But I figured with a proper doghouse and blanket that wouldn't be so hard to deal with. lol It's -11c out at the moment here in Montreal and she seems to take that rather well. But then again, she only goes out for walks and bathroom breaks. So I think I'm in the same boat currently, although this winter has been rather mild compared to last. Since I'm Californian, I wasn't too thrilled when I moved out here a few years back and it was -27c out some nights when I hadn't been in temperatures much less than like -3c or so. Talk about a shock to one's system!
