Anyone have dogs with allergies?
Well stanlie has been losing fur recently hes always had a thin coat but over the last few weeks its gotten worse, he did have mange as a pup i thought it could be this but after taking looking things up and a trip too the vet which left me £130 out of pocket, we now think its an allergy which sounds about right as the bald spots are not where mange normally appear.
Hes got medicated dog shampoo, also got advocate treatment and omega oil for him from the vets.
If this dosnt work which in 6 weeks the vets want too see him again, they then want to test him for possible allergies, the vet said she thinks its some kind of airborne allergery as he has red eyes which hes always had and never really seemd a problem too me, if they then find no allergys it will be a exclusin diet-trial no treats just the food the recommend.
Has anyone had any experiences with allergies, im debating weather or not too put him on a hypo-allergenic food like wainwrights still allowing the prize choicechicken meat in it too see weather or not this clears the problem up or not.
My oh thinks they have ripped me off and why could they not just test him for allergies straight away rather than trying all this stuff first which i have too agree but at the time i thought what they where doing was best for him.
Can anyone give me any advice and tips please, not sure what too do and whats the best step, she said that staffys are very prone too dry itchy sking problems.

Re: Anyone have dogs with allergies?
Not to the same extent as you, ie an allergy causing skin probs, but when I first got Moo she had terrible diareah, tested for everything! I went onto Royal Canin sensitivity control, which is bland but really helped.
I know Jstaff had probs with Suki, he might help. Hope you get it sorted soon hun Xx

Re: Anyone have dogs with allergies?
Yeah i think i may end up getting that food, seeing if it improves if not i think i will be able too rule out food allergies.
Been looking up alopecia and sounds very much like stan. but theres different types.
http://www.petwave.com/Dogs/Dog-Health-Center/Skin-Disorders/Alopecia/Treatment.aspx
Hes on medicated shampoo so fingers crossed i will see results.
Someoen mentioned about it being because of his colour and that makes sense because where his brindle use too be seems too be where the lack of fur is.
SOme pics too show you his baldness/ thin fur. i took these earlier.

Re: Anyone have dogs with allergies?
Suki has food allergies and was getting small raised bumps all over her skin. She was never losing hair though. We took her to a dermatologist to see what she was allergic to which was most proteins so we found a food made of sweet potato and deer. She can also have bison and kangroo so we just feed her those. We also use a medicated shampoo that was prescribed.
If it's an airborne allergin hopefully it is seasonal. Your vet can prescribe medication but I have also used over the counter children's medication for my previous dog.
You can also call around for differnet vets opinions if it is a serious issue. Vets, like doctors can either be jacks of all trades or specialists. We were only having the one allergy issue so we saw a vet that specialized in only that area because he was more knowledgeable and experienced.

Re: Anyone have dogs with allergies?
Personally I wouldn't use the advocate unless you know for certain that he has fleas etc. I hate using chemicals on a dog if they're not needed.
A vet will rarely do allergy tests straight away because they are time consuming, costly and not particularly nice for the dog. They involve skin scrapes & blood tests etc, none of which are very comfortable for the poor pooch!
Have you thought that it could be a food allergy? The main food allergies in dogs are grains & poultry, believe it or not. Try changing him over to a hypoallergenic food, but leave out the chicken & see if that has any effect.
I'd also try Piriton if you haven't already.

Re: Anyone have dogs with allergies?
billy gets a few of these raised spots sometimes, i think it might be chicken as he has not got any now, so last night he had chicken let you know what happens. Also his fur is quite thin on his chest.

Re: Anyone have dogs with allergies?
Im thinking i will see what happenes using the shampoo and advocate the vet said too use this as it protects against alot of things not just fleas. if i see no improvement i will be putting him on rooyal canine hypoallergenic food. and see what happens if i still see no improvements i will go for the allergy testing.
Ive used piriton before when he has come out in spots my friend uses it for her dog whos allergic too the grass.
Thanks for the replys guys x
