Anaesthesia before spaying
Hi there,
I'd have a question,
I discussed spaying with my vet and they said that I'd leave Stella there and they would do the op - which is clear, but they confirmed that I'd have to leave before she is sedated.
I had had 2 female dogs spayed years ago and several cats and it had never happened hat the vets would have told me to leave the animal there alone. They were given the initial sedation when they were with me and only when they were sleeping or half asleep the doctor took them and I left. It was in Prague so maybe it's different here in the UK?
I'd love to look for another vet - or is it normal? Isn't it too traumatizing?... any ideas or experience please?
Thanx

when we took our last dog he was given a quick relaxer bit when we got there and we put him in the cage while he waited for surgeory then we left and picked him up later. ask your vet if it is possible to do this

Re: Anaesthesia before spaying
Hi,
thanks, yes I asked and they said they don't do this, no sedation when I am there, just "leave the dog and come later" which I don't like And they said "bring her between 10 to 11 so she does not have to wait too long when I see how strong she is". Not sure what they meant by this
So I will ask somewhere else

Yes, I think you should ask around. A lot of vets prefer you to leave the dog so that they can do the operation in their own time if you see what I mean. If they sedate her while you are there, then the operation would have to be done immediately and they may need to settle her a bit first.
If you really want to be with her, though, do ask other vets what their policy is.

I think Caryll is correct, when i worked as a vet nurse the vet had things all ready so that several animals are done on certain days and in the order that was best for those animals being done on that day etc.Often the animals were more relaxed after the owner left and wasn't there to add their own anxiety about the operation? but you will know your dog best and nothing to stop you choosing a vet who will do it your way.
