spaying
i know there has been many other feeds on this subject but was just reading another one about neutering and it said that it could possibly affect growth (muscle), i was wondering if if his is the same with spaying?
I do think diesel is quite slender but nothing that im worried about, she was done at around 7months because i didnt want to risk her being "caught" and also was advised (maybe pushed slightly) by my vet to do it sooner rather than later. My brothers dog got cancer in her...emm breasts? or the doggy version and he was told if she was spayed this might not have happened so this worried me, but now am wondering if it was the right decision. i know its too late now but am just really inquiring on an educational basis?

Re: spaying
Early neutering delays the closure of the growth plates & will result in a leggier, slightly narrower dog. Yes, it helps to lessen mammary tumours, but if you spay later you still lessen the chances of mammary cancer but your dog will realise jts full physical potential.

Re: spaying
see thats all the stuff the vet doesn't tell you! they just kept giving me more and more reasons for it, and i was just a knew dog owner and didnt know about this place and stupidly thought "vets know best"
Not to worry i love Diesel just the way she is, she still got good muscle definition, she'll just maybe never be proper staffy stalky but i think she gorgeous and so does everyone that meets her and thats all that matters

Re: spaying
I was told not to believe anything I read off forums by the vet as he wants to do Tommy now, apparently these internet forums are only made up of people who read up on stuff off the internet

Re: spaying
I work for a big German company and it's not easy to tell them when they are wrong (which actually isn't that often)

Re: spaying
In all fairness, your vet was most likely more concerned about the risk of mammary tumours than on a dog that may not reach its 'bulkiness'.
Why you vet was recommended spaying before the first heat is this:
<0.5% if sterilized before onset of cycle
8% if sterilized after 1st cycle
28% if sterilized after 2nd cycle
No effect is after 2.5 years.
Whilst I'm not saying other factors shouldn't be considered, thats where your vet is coming from.

Re: spaying
What they also don't tell you is that although mammary tumours are one of the most common cancers in bitches, it still isn't all that common! I've had 4 bitches, all lived to good old age & none of them developed mammary tumours.

not got time to read it all at the moment, but from the first bit i read it seems there are more negatives than there are positives for female spaying...which does worry me, the vet only told me about mammary tumours.
i will read the full thing tomorrow to see what else its saying (got to walk dog and go to work right now)
As it stands just now i am still glad i done it because diesel has been mounted by 3/4 dogs and although it never went anywhere it could have, and none of the dogs were staffs and i would want to add to the cross staff population....or the staffy population if a staffy caught her
