spaying
Hi, its been a while since ive been on here tbh but ive been looking for some info. our lexie is now 15 months old (coming up 16 months). We had her booked in to have her pre spay health check a few months ago, but she came into season for the 2nd time. she is booked in to have her pre spay health check tomorrow morning.
for some reason we have been having doubts about getting her done or not, she is our first dog and both beleived it was the "done thing". we have no intention on trying to breed her or anyhting like that and she is totally a pet.
from previous reading i thought it was the best thing for the dog, but after reading some other posts etc it seems it may not be the best thing for her. could anyone give me the positive and negatives for getting ehr done...in a nut shell basically.
thanks

Re: spaying
To be honest you can't split the subject into black and white. There are always people pro, which will argue health, accidental breeding, and people that will argue against, again health or the op itself.
Its an ongoing debate, and is most certainly the owners choice. All you can really gage is opinions.
My opinion, I would certainly have it done. My first was done before her first season, and Moo after her first season.

Re: spaying
I just got my baby spayed at 9 months.
We are like you and she is just a pet...(not to mention she had demodex at one point and were told her puppies could have it as well so we did not want that for any pups).........
The 1st few days were no good and she was in A lot of pain, or maybe just so drugged up that she was confused...but she was crying...she seems to have gotten better...
She has been acting more aggressive towards our other femal dog when it comes to food, but im not sure if thats due to her spay....
thats about the only negatives I have seen thus far.
Positives....she has slowed down a bit. she doesnt seem to be so out of control and wrestless....hopefully we start seeing her put on some weight soon =)....

Re: spaying
I think its a personal choice and totally about the dog in question.
If your not intending to breed from her then should she be go through the upset of seasons and natures way to reproduce but then its a big op. Its a hard decision and one I didnt take lightly you have to do the right thing for your girl

Re: spaying
Although I am in the if it ain't broke don't fix it camp,I would always spay a bitch if I wasn't planning on showing with a view to breeding.
This is based on my own personal experience and one which changed my mind about having bitches spayed.
My Meg is very very lucky to still be with us,she had been in season and was a few days out of it,on the Friday morning she was fine,by the friday evening she was very poorly, lethargic, very depressed, off her food, she was at the vets on the sat morning with suspected Pyo,she was admitted, placed on an Iv drip, had a scan and bloods done,a few hours later our worst fears confirmed it was indeed Pyometra.
Thankfully she was stable enough to undergo the emergency surgery and thanks to our vets she is still here with us.
The op was complicated, and she spent the night with them and came home Sunday.
Had she not have been seen and had an emergency spay she would have died.
Pyometra kills entire bitches and time is of the essence, Pyo can and will kill in hours.

Re: spaying
There's no right or wrong here. I'm the first to stand up against neutering, but that's just my personal choice! She's probably mature enough now, as she's had a second season, so it really depends on what you actually want. Can you put up with more seasons & the possibilty of phantoms pregnancies? There's also the chance of pyometra (nasty infection of the womb, which can be fatal if not caught early), and mammary tumours if you don't neuter. Having said that, she may never suffer with any of those things!
Neutering can cause urinary incontinence and nervous aggression, although less so in mature dogs. And of course there's always the risk of the anaesthetic & surgery itself.
Have a look through the various articles online, and try to weigh up the pros & cons. From there, go with what, to you, feels right.

hmm well she has had her check up this morning and all is well, she is booked in to be spayed at the end of January. I didnt realise you had to wait 3 months after the season.
I spoke with the vet and after reading as much as I can I think im going to ger her done still it seems like a kinder thing to do....although it doesnt sound it lol
thanks for all the input
i will try and get some more pics up, havent updated on here for a fair while now.

Re: spaying
Yes, 3 months after a season is the norm. That leaves time for all the hormones etc to settle down to normal levels.
I'm sure she'll be fine - your biggest problem will be keeping her quiet for a while after the operation!
