Night Time Naughtiness!
So far, Vlad has been the best little puppy every. He is all but toilet trained, he knows basic commands, he is awesome walking (well, most of the time) and, up until the last 3 nights, he has been a 10-12 hour sleeper at night... even then we have to wake hime up so he can go to the toilet in the morningThen he comes back inside and cuddles back into his bed! Now... he is still a bugger to get up in the morning, but of a night he is really naughty for a couple of hours. He gets walked, we play with him in the back yard he plays loads by himself... We are feeding him at the same time, he pees and poos outside on command, but he just won't settle at night... he barked at me tonight when he was in trouble... it seems like he just gets so over tired and he is trying his best to stay awake. Once he's asleep, he snores for the country, and thats it! But it's the getting him there!!!

we had this with lemmy but he grew out of it. still lazey on a morning but take shimself off to bed about 10. we put his bed in the kitchen so that he has a quiet space with no TV sounds or lights. we dont play for at least an hour before we want him to settle down that way he isnt over stimulated when its bed time

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
He's crying and barking... he has been out for toilet and he has been given cuddles and tummy rubs, he is comfortable etc... I feel bad ignoring him... but don't know if it is just an attention thing, being naughty etc...

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
yes the secret is to ignore the bad behaviour and he will learn that it is not worth his while.. I know it is hard ! Winston was whinging and carrying on the first nights, and we so wanted to go and cuddle him..but now he has learnt that it won't do him any good...
can you leave a radio on quietly ..might help him settle too, we leave the radio on for Winston , but not on a heavy metal station !!
maybe you could try a couple of rescue remedy drops in his water at night.. just calms them down and relaxes them ( I use the human drops on Jethro when he is restless )
Good luck !!

We went through this with Suki as well. She grew out of it in a few weeks thankfully. Have you tried a nice long walk right before bed?

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Thanks for all of the advice. I was in tears last night! He was being awful! I just didn't know what to do... and I felt so bad (but did it anyway because it seemed like the right thing) ignoring him while he barked and cried. He had done everything... all toilets, he had been exercised (even that was awful last night) given cuddles, played with, more cuddles, belly rub, a chew stick (this usually settles him!) and praise for when he was good... this last was very little last night! He still sleeps all night when he eventually goes off. He might be teething... he mitt just be trying it on... he's a bit calmer tonight (touch wood!) and this hopefully means he'll be a good puppy tonight! P.S Vanessa: He LOVES the television! If he's a bit out of sorts, we leave the tele on

Seems there is no difference between a new puppy and a new baby!

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
LOL... apparently not! I spoke too soon, though. The naughtiness has begun. It's different to his usual idiot hour! He gets ridiculous now!

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Looks like we're in for another night of it I hope he grows out of this... he has been perfect all day and evening... idiot hour has been extended to idiot 3 hours I think! We have both given him huge cuddles and he just won't settle. I really do think he is teething. hmmmmmmmmm

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Could well be starting to teeth. See if you can get some teething gel from the pet shop - I used it on Dempsey & it did seem to help a bit.
I wouldn't give hima chew stick (or anything else) to eat before bed time - all that'll do is give him an energy boost......that's the last thing you want! Try getting some lavender essential oil, put a drop nehind each ear & two or three drops on his bedding (no more) before bed. Lavender is known to be calming at night.

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
the lavender is a great idea!
I have used that on Jethro when he was going through his restless stage...

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Thanks! Loving the lavender idea! I will get some today! I took all the toys out of his playpen (which never distracted him from sleeping before, but now...) last night and that did very little LOL. But, again... lavender... I am kicking myself that I didn't think of that. THANK YOU!

It's a nightmare sometimes. Paddy will be as good as gold then go mental for days.
You're not doing anything wrong. Try not to get upset *hugs* xx

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Oh and another thing. If it is down to teething. Icecubes work wonders. When Paddy is gnawing on everything I give him an icecube. Calms him down
Only bad point is every time you go to the freezer you get a puppy around your feet

Will try that too! I will try anything at the moment. My husband says he hopes his next teeth will be rubber ones

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Ice cubes work a treat here. Also a plastic bottle before bed. Paddy throws it around for a good hour and then sleeps solidly

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Well, 2 nights ago, we had an email from the breeder we purchased Vlad from, saying they should be teething by now and gave us little tips and advice! This makes me more grateful about the breeders we went with! Always happy to give advice and they never make us feel silly Along with all the advice we receive from here and awesome breeders, we feel very lucky

How is Vlad doing at night? Really keen to hear if the lavender helped.

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Jack went through this stage as well. Thankfully he grew out of it and we don't have any issues. Normally before Jack goes to bed, he'll be on one of the couches just relaxing, almost sleeping. So when he goes to bed, he is already sleepy and ready to sleep.

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
A great idea when puppy is teething is to freeze a plastic takeaway container with water to which you add a stock cube... then put some bits of vegetables in it, a boiled egg cut in pieces etc... Once it is frozen give it to your puppy ( outside! ) they love licking it..it is soothing and cool on their gums...
Even now Winston loves chewing on a plain ice cube!

Re: Night Time Naughtiness!
Okay... we've been using the lavender oil n his bed and behind his ears and he does settle a little quicker (and he smells so pretty too, so BONUS!) and I have been using an oil burner with a couple of drops of lavender in it before he comes in for the night to calm him down. He still has a few minutes of being a total idiot, then he just crashes!!! So thank you
